Belisarius. He reconquered a great deal of the Western Roman Empire with meager resources, poor troops, and a distrustful Byzantine Emperor (Justinian) at his back always interfering. He could probably have become a king or even replaced the emperor, and yet he remained loyal to the end.
My second candidate might be the Roman Emperor Julius. He fought many great campaigns, personally at the head of his army like Alexander and the other great generals. He might not have been a strategic or tactical genious, but he was a pretty good emperor.
==Edit==
Of modern times, I would have to say Vo Nguyen Giap. I understand a lot of people will be offended, but the fact of the matter is that his strategy defeated both the US and France. This is no small achievement. Just because someone is your enemy doesn't mean you can't respect his skill.

Alexander,no contest. He led from the front.
While Leonidas fought a glorius battle there was little strategy involved.
Alexander led professional cavalry at the age of sixteen! Leonidas probably had not finished training at that age.

Alexander fought many more wars and battles, many more than Leonidas could even dream about. Historically he is considered the best general ever!

Leonidas, without a doubt. The battle against the Persians led by Xerxes is legendary, even before a movie was made about it.

There are no great generals. All of them are scumbags who kill people.
