I am British and I fail to understand this concept that American soldiers must necessarily be "fighting for freedom". And if it weren't for them 'you'd have no freedom'. I've seen many liberals who are generally against the war but uphols this 'fighting for our freedom' thing to.

I can't really see anyone who is a threat to the freedom that exists in the US. They have the biggest military in the world, it's one of the richest counties in the world, but are a bunch of Islamic crazies really a threat to American society as a whole? Also all the major wars that's been fought since the second world war seems to have been fought to further the interests of the American elites (Vietnam, Iraq etc.)

BTW: I'm not insulting American soldiers or anything here. I don't have anything against them as I've never met any of them and I hope they get home OK. I'd just like this cleared up.

well i am a soldier, have been deployed and my husband is currently. im not quite sure how you are not aware of the terrorist threats. we are being attacked because of our beliefs. we as soldiers are activated to eliminate the threat to our people. you also have soldiers there. i met many on the deployment. the terrorist are not a threat to the military. they are a threat to the personal safety of the people in our country. in iraq, the people walk out the door knowing that anything could explode anytime anywhere. we do not have to worry about that.

Two concepts.

One is the troops fighting and risking their lives in general military service, because serving the military is supposed to be intended to protect the country. Hence the oath to defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.

Since the Constitution is what preserves and represents American freedoms, defending the constitution protects those freedoms.

The second is the belief by some Americans (a minority, according to most polls) that the current military occupation of Iraq is somehow helping to protect the country.

The second claim is based on the theory (which I've never seen rationally explained) that if we did not occupy Iraq, someone that would cause us to lose our freedom.

And no, most of the US military actions in the past half-century have actually been to benefit some other country and support the "freedom" of other people -- that's the argument in Iraq. Vietnam was an exception, which was based purely on our own interests.

Fighting to protect US interests does protect our freedom. Protecting access to vital resources is a good enough reason to fight. A blow to the US economy can seriously threaten the quality of life of a great number of Americans. But our troops are also out there fighting terrorists who are truly determined to bring down our society. They don't just want to strip away our freedom, they want to kill us. But truthfully, most of the time our troops are not really fighting for our freedom at all. They are unselfishly fighting for the freedom of ungrateful people who hate us anyway. Right now they are doing a little of both. There is a lot to be lost if they fail and very little to be gained. Have some respect for them and those who have sworn the oath before them.

Actually, I think you pose an excellent question.

Yes, we are a powerful country with a large military force capable of destroying an entire country. However, we are not dealing with a country. We are dealing with a faction of Islamic idiots professing the destruction of Western culture in the name of their God. Today they are scattered in countries like Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Pakistan dedicated to the worldwide spread of total Islamic domination of all cultures and religions. To stop it, America has chosen to fight them on their ground (as horrible as it is) to maintain the freedoms of not only our country, but the entire free world.

I would think that you would be able to fully understand our mission if you remember recent attacks upon your own country by Islamic fanatics. Who died in those attacks? Mostly innocent men, women and children whose freedoms were destroyed. We fight to stop that from ever happening again there, here, or anywhere in the free world.

I would hope that you still remember your freedom today was provided and guaranteed by your/our military forces against Nazi facists intending to remove your freedoms in a similar fashion found within Islamic circles.

So, to answer your question of how our troops fight for our freedom, we are trying to stop the insanity of the Islamic world now. Today. In countries like Afganistan and Iraq. Before we do it on the streets of Chicago, Miami, London, Madrid, Frankfurt, and other areas where people live in freedom without opression by Islamic idiots. Our troops serve the flag, yours and ours, with pride and honor in the interest of peace. They are heroes and I hope you will think of them in a similar fashion while appreciating their difficult fight for our freedoms.

God Bless America and God Save The Queen. And, may HE protect our soldiers in harms way.

The purpose in my mind is to fight for the freedom of those who cannot fight for themselves. Thwarting an enemy combatant or terrorist that invokes evil on others not only provides freedom for Americans and our way of life, but for those cant stand up to the evil. Our precense in Iraq & Afghanistan has saved lives including but certainly not limited to Americans.

Well it's this way moron, we lost 3,000 innocent lives in an attack on our soil from the rag heads. Being rich or having the best military did not stop that. Stop reading that Marxist crap and join the free world. Freedom ain't free, it has cost us millions of lives, many of them helping you Britt's with WW ll. It was your "Chamberlain" (not sure of the spelling) that was kissing up to Hitler prior to WW ll that made Hitler think you were an easy take. The free world is in this fight whether you like it or not. I like the Britt's and I think they will continue to raise to the occasion...well, most of you that is.....

al queda and it's loosely knit org. hates the U.S concept of freedom which they see as an infection to their primitive way of life and a threat to their religous power platform held over many of the islamic countries. Iraq may not have been tops on the list as a bastion of Islamic Fascism, but it was on the list, now especially it is.

Saddam paid rewards to the families of suicide bombers.
There is plenty of evidence that he had WMD - what happened to it is anyones guess, but I'll hedge my bets that Syria knows.

It may be hard to see that but you should..The U.K has been slowly changing laws in order placate the growing Muslim population in your country. Soon you will lose many more freedoms.

My belief is that by removing a dictator, one who could attack the U.S. on a whim, or spread their style of antagonistic government, we are protecting the U.S. We have removed someone who could attack us at will, with whatever weapons they wanted- conventional, or nuclear/biological/chemical. We have also protected the "status qou" in the "free world" and as long as the "free world" remains unchanged, so will the freedoms the the U.S. enjoys, as well as security in knowing that the chances of attacks on U.S. soil remain at a minimum.

Are you kidding me? Look at your own country's history of trying to overtake other countries. England has quite a brilliant record of that. Ask the folks up there in Northern Ireland what they think. This is like the pot calling the kettle black!
p.s. I do love fish and chips and The Royals.
