I'm inclined to take the train, having taken the train between NYC and Boston; it's fun, and DC is one stop further on that line. I'm planning to visit a friend in DC in the fall and thinking of taking the train. A friend of mine says the train is a waste of $ and the bus is a better deal. I don't mind spending a little bit extra for a better experience. But what do you think? Have you taken both the bus and the train? How do they compare?

The Acela Regional (not the Express) is the best way - there's not really that much time differential between the Regional and Express to warrant paying that much more for it.

I'd recommend the bus only if you're really budget-conscious and want to go from New York to DC on the cheap. But for the longer trip from Boston, a train is definitely worth the extra $$$.

Flying is not really much faster than taking the train, though it may actually be a little cheaper (I know JetBlue regularly offers fares from $49-59 each way). But this doesn't take into account the fact that DC's Dulles Airport isn't as convenient as Boston's Logan airport, nor the extra 2 hours you'd spend getting to the airport early and going through security. Nor does it consider the extra hassle of flying, and the chance of a significant flight delay. If you want to arrive relaxed and ready to enjoy DC, I'd stay away from the plane or the bus.

Washington Union Station puts you in the center of it all, and Amtrak's northeast corridor really is a world-class train service.

The bus stinks. It is cheaper but there are too many stops and it is not as comfortable. I have taken the train from Boston to New York also, and it was fun. I suggest spending the money and taking the train of taking a quick flight.

Assuming that flying isn't an option? Cost is similar to train and it will be faster. That said, the train is a much better, if more costly experience than the bus. It is what I would do.

You can take the Acela Express. It is just 6.5 hours one way, usually about $160 per adult.
