Obviously there are no dirt cheap areas to live in nyc, but where are some more affordable housing options that are still close to everything, and safe? (affordable being in around 250,000 for a place) Also what are some ways to live cheaply, so that you still have extra money to spend on leisure activities such as vacations and stuff?

Move in with a few friends. You'll be surprised on how much money you save. Just make sure everyone gets along, however, nothing worse than living with someone you hate.

Roomates, roomates, roomates and oh, roomates. lol

I currently live with my mother and my sister in a 2 bedroom basement apartment. The rent for a stupid basement apartment is 1200 and thats the going rate. Splitting it is so much easier.

Im guessing the only real way to live cheaply in nyc, is to 1) rent out a BEDROOM and 2) work 2 or more jobs at once.

I may live at home, but i still pay and i could afford to pay what i would pay if i was to move out on my own. And 250,000 for a house in NY would get you a shack. Literally, you would either have a studio apartment for that price, or that would be the price you have to put down on the house your going to buy :) hah
