How to I get rid of lag on my computer.?

One morning I got on my computer.For some reason it had restarted itself and went to a black screen that said please insert a disk or something like that. I restarted my computer about 20 times to finally get past that screen. Then it went to a blue screen and it said it had deleted weird things that I have never heard of. Before all of this happened my computer ran smoothly and I never had a problem like this. Now its really slow and when I try to play games on it, the screen freezes for a couple of seconds and the music behind it
skips. What can I do to stop this?

1. Windows restore
2. Free up RAM

1. Set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.

These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.
