Sales tax is legal. It is written into the state laws in 44 states and many local ordinances. Is it constitutional? So far, yup. There have been challenges to aspects of sales tax collection that have gone as high as the US Supreme Court. (For example, one really famous case that layed out the physical presence standard for sales tax collection is Quill v. North Dakota.)

As far as sales tax being a form of double taxation, that's not a problem either. Double taxation happens all the time. You pay a big chunk tax on your income (as income tax) when you earn it. Then when you die and leave a big estate, the government takes another big chunk as estate tax.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but sales tax is legal.

Now if you are really asking about paying tax on internet purchases when the seller is in another state, that's a whole other topic. . . .

You need to watch the greatest movie America Freedom to Fascism. The 16th amendment which is the tax amendment was legally ratified, so technically no we don't have to pay income tax. The sales tax is an imposed, legal tax. The things is though, if you don't pay the taxes you get held in the courts for not paying them. Watch the movie, it's awesome.

If your state levies a sales tax, then you heard wrong. Mark that source as unreliable, at least for tax information.

Maybe we should do away with sales tax. We could just have a federal, state and county income tax.

Hehehe...another one of the 'illegal taxation' stories, of which I have long ago lost count.

Taxation on sales is legal, and has been upheld by various courts of law, giving it roughly the same effect as written statute.

Now find something more rational to inquire of.

This is actually up for debate. Many people feel that this is double taxation and some don't. Call your state representative and tell them what you think.
