The only VA benefit you lose is your GI Bill education benefits. You are eligible for all other VA programs.
And, the VA CANNOT upgrade a discharge. The only way to upgrade a discharge is by applying to the Discharge Review Board of the respective military branch.
An upgrade is far from automatic.

You haven't lost any veterans' benefits with a general discharge. All you have lost is the right to wear an Honorable Discharge pin in your lapel.

Yes, there are ways to do this. One way is to join your local Veterans Organization have them to do it, or you can file your DD214 and VA Form 21-4138 and request an upgrade with the Department of Veterans Affairs yourself.

If you are able to get your discharge upgraded to "Honorable" you have the full benefit package.
