Yes, you can marinate a steak but it is usually not necessary for the better cuts. Try this. Take a clove of garlic for each steak, cut the clove in half and rub the garlic clove halves over the steak. Remember, always season both sides. Now pour some olive oil on the steak and rub it in. Add kosher salt and ground black pepper to taste. If you want to marinate, just cover with plastic wrap and place in your refrigerator. Remove from refrigerator 1/2 hour before grilling. Grill until desired doneness, remove from grill to platter and place a pat of butter on each steak to melt. Let sit 5 minutes. Eat and enjoy.

Chicken differs in that it must be cooked longer. Chicken needs to be completely done in order to be consumed safely. You can marinate with olive oil and your choice of spices if you like. To answer your question about regular steak, the answer is YES. Garlic on your steak before you cook it will make it taste great! I only do this for my BBQ grilled steaks. In my neighborhood they call me "BBQ King". Anyway, I wouldn't necessarily place the garlic on the steak if I was going to pan cook it on the stove top, broiling it - then possibly. If I stove top cook a steak (which is really rare unless I do minute steak for breakfast) then I would use the onions in the pan just before the steak was done.

Can't help you on the chicken steak - my BBQ is charcoal and I rotisserie chicken this way lots of work, but so much fun AND the compliments from the neighbors are great - even better to watch people eat the food!

Good question!

Steak can be marinated in many things from sugary soda as one poster suggests to Italian dressing - personally for grilling I prefer a dry rub:
Steak Rub
4 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
2 tablespoons fresh coarse ground black pepper
2 tablespoons sweet paprika
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon dried oregano leaves
2 teaspoons ground cumin
In a bowl, combine all ingredients and stir until well blended.
Store mixture in an air-tight container.
To use: Rub the seasoning blend on a steak and grill, or use it to season beans, rices, grains or vegetables.

they need less time to absorb so you can enjoy your meal sooner - the same stands for chicken "steaks" aka breast fillets.

ummm of course it does one is chicken one is beef beef is more hearty and is great with onion and garlic also you can saute the onion garlic with mushrooms and peppers and have that just on top for steak (beef) you usually wanna marinate it over night for best results now are you doing a dry marinade of wet i and for the chicken instead of using onion and garlic why not try a sweat and spicy rub like ketchup hot sauce a little brown sugar garlic salt and pepper and crushed chili peppers that's good with say a bed of rice corn on the cob veggie and salad or pasta salad for the carb lovers lol i don't know if this helps at all but my love for cooking came out hard core so i hope it did a bit:)

Usually, tougher steaks need marinade.
Rubs with flavoured salt are better IMO.
Grill for 2-3 minutes on each side & flip.
You can tell doneness by the juices.

Chicken breasts can be cooked on the grill.
But I'd suggest making foil packets with onion inside.
Seal them by crimping the edges to prevent leaks.
You'll need a meat thermometer to judge doneness.
Steaks can be rare but chicken must be well-done.

I've found that marinating in cheap red wine and some herbs (thyme, rosemary etc) makes a very good steak.
