It's funny, but I can be both, depending on the situation. At work we had trouble getting good employees in the department and went through so many that I lost all sense of optimism. I think when you hear that things will get better for years, but they never do, it ruins your optimism.
However, I think on balance I'm more of an optimist. I believe God will take care of me which gives me optimism in life. I believe in love, hope, and that most people are good at heart. I like to think things will get better in this country and world as time goes by.

Doughnuts are ripoffs. That hole is 10 cents worth of extra food ;)
I'm honestly a bit of both. Pessimists are more realistic about things and look at the whole picture, even if its mostly on the bad. Optimists usually believe everything will turn out well in the end even if it is blind hope. I think it's good to have a bit of both and I try to incorporate both into my life, even if I may be a bit more of a pessimist.

The optimist focuses on the whole donut
The pessimist focuses the hole
The realist focuses on the disturbing problem of why there should be a hole in the middle of the donut, and attempts to make sense of such an absurdity

I used to have a friend who would say "The difference between a pessimist and an optimist is that the optimist doesn't have all the facts yet." I always thought that was pretty clever, but admit that I'm nonetheless an optimist myself. I'll take the donut, thanks! Glazed and cream-filled, all the better.
I base my outlook on people. I've found that if you look for the good in people, you'll generally find it. If you look for the bad, you'll find that too, but neither of you will be made happier by that. So look for the good stuff, always.

I am a pessimist by conventional terms or definitions. I think it is a positive way to look at life. The optimists are always saying it could be worse. I as a pessimist am always saying how can we make it better. Why do we have to settle for the staus quo.

An optimist assumes the best in each situation and a pessimist assumes the worst. A realist (or skeptic) assumes nothing, but waits to see what will happen. That's me.

Neither. Im a realist. The pessismist worries about the coming storm. The optimist hopes for better winds & waves ahead. The realist adjusts the sail....

I'm more of an optimist - I usually think that things will turn out fine and I have hope. I am not going to dwell on the bad that might happen (well not usually, no one is perfect).

An optimist sees the glass as half full.
A pessimist sees the glass as half empty.
A realist sees the glass as too big.

Hey, don't knock on doughnut holes. They're tasty AND portable. And they come in buckets of thirty.
