Unfortunately it sounds as if your transmission has burned out the second gear, or something in the auto clutch is malfunctioning. I don't think that changing the tranny oil will do any good, if anything, it'll take whatever is allowing the gear to grip out and then you will have to go to a dealer, and may even end up stranded in the middle of nowhere. I think your best bet is get a used tranny from a junkyard and have that mechanic friend of yours put it in till you can get a factory refurbished one.

Sheklikak and Logan S are correct. If your trans is slipping and the trans fluid has not been changed within the last 50k, than most of the time, changing the trans fluid will cause the problem to get worse. My recommendation would be to save up for a new trans, I believe that that also uses the AW4 (Austin Warner) trans that Toyota made, then change out the fluids and see if it helps. If it works, you have a little spending money, chances are, it will not work as the varnish is helping your vehicle now. But now you have the money to have it rebuilt. The rebuild should cost between $4-500 as long as there is no other damage (get estimate at local place first). Do not go to dealer, Go to reputable trans shop. You could replace with some other junk yard swap, but then you are inheriting someone else's problems.

If you flush your tranny you will loosen up all of the gunk inside and make it worse! Try adding some oil if you are low, otherwise, you may need a rebuild or swap from a late modle Cherokee out of a junk yard. You can find a good one in a jeep that has a blown engine, engine fire, rear quarter smash.
