I think the music sounds terrible through these speakers. what is the reason people get these things, it can't be for listening to music?

It's a trendy way for people to boost their self-esteem by getting attention, although negative.
It's also benficial in the gay community in that it's a way to signal others of their gay pride.
All sub woofers in cars are breaking noise ordinance laws and it's only a matter of time before this fad fades away.

To me a sub woofer completes a stereo system because you need big enough speakers for those low frequencies. You're talking about those people who put huge sub woofers in their car with a stock stereo system and they really don't get high quality sound with that set up. You need high quality mids, tweeters, amp, EQ, and a stereo that can handle all that power.

Don't judge every system by the ones you hear next to you at the traffic light. Subwoofers can be used to produce the low frequency ranges that smaller speakers can't play, resulting in a full, balanced sound. They can also be used to annoy everyone within a fifty foot radius.
You've only experienced the ones that are being misused. You need to experience a well-designed system with a properly adjusted bass speaker before you can decide whether they're useful or not.

There is a slight difference between audiophiles and bass heads.
Audiophiles want to create the realism as close as possible. This can means a nice set of 12's in the back strictly for a good bass extension.
Bass heads want, well BASS!!!
The lure of subwoofers is many. Do you like NO bass in your music?

it is all about the bass. It amplifies the bass and vibrates the room/car when it plays. Most subs are attatched to speakers, so I can see why you think it might sound bad just listening to the sub part.

Its to add that lower tones that makes the music you are listening too complete.
I have one system that is meant to be loud as hell...... and I have another car that sounds exactly how I think music should sound like.... once you hear a GOOD system (not a rattle car) then you will want one as well

black people like the bass in rap so they get subs to show off their 24"+ rims and chromed limo tinted cars, other people like to get attention, some people get simple subs to give that full sound to their stereo /:

You have never experienced the amazing booty bass dance music of Kid 606 or Knifehanchop eh? I think they are silly, but I would get them if I had the money to waste.
