can you use something else instead of a razor blade to make a foxhole radio work?

A razor blade with bluing serves as the detector (diode) of a crystal radio. Tuning of a crystal radio would normally be done with a small wire called a cat wisker. The foxhole radio would use a safety pin instead of the cat wisker to probe the razor in search of a station.

Foxhole radios are so called because of their use and construction by G.I.'s in WWII.

A substitute to the razor blade rectifier is to use a germanium signal/switching diode such as a 1N34 or equialent.

I dont understand the question. Are they using it as an antenna? If so, then yes. Not so sure about other applications. Was this in a movie? Explain a little more.
