I just noticed some orange coming up on some of my live rock. i was reading about CLOD and was wondering if anyone may have more info on how to cure it or get rid of it. All my levels are right where they should be except my calcium dropped to about 350 where i normally keep it around 400-420. Thought this was normal though since i recently added a new decent sized brain coral so i just figured it was time to start dosing more calcium being that i have more corals. So if anyone has any good info or has ever gotten this any info would be greatly appreciated.

i just added some photos of it on my 360 account they are the last 2 pics in the nano reef album. If you notice the orange on the rock growing on the bottom left right under my green ricordia. i was reading it could possibly be a sponge. can anyone ID this as a sponge,CLOD, or something else??

well thanks for the help everyone but i think its all figured out. Its a sponge not CLOD what a relief! but if your still interested the parametrs of everything else are pH 8.3, dKH 11, sg 1.023, amonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 0, calcium is back up to 400ish. so thanks for the help again

Hi Craig,

I've never had to deal with this, but here's some info I've found. It's bacterial in nature, so you might be able to treat with an antibiotice, but none of the info says whether it's gram negative or positive.

By the way it grows, it is possible for it to spread (through the water if flow is strong enough) to neighboring corals to infect them. So the first thing I'd do is remove it as soon as possible if you have other corals in the tank.

You might try one of the saltwater versions of Mardel's Maracyn I and II (or both in combination) or Furanase in a quarantine tank to see if you can treat the infected coral, and keep an eye on anything else in the main tank that could be infected. I wouldn't recommend random treatment in the main tank, since the antibiotics will affect the bacteria involved in the nitrigen cycle as well.

ADDITION: After seeing the photos, it looks like all the orange is growing on the live rock and it's a little more three-dimensional that I would expect for a bacterium. Think this probably is just a sponge. See this link to compare what you've got with the photos shown: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/sponges.htm

Nice looking tank too!

im sorry to be a pain can i get more info on exactly what your perameters are but sad news is there is not yet an exact cure for this desease all i could recomend is maybe removing the piece of live rock that it is on raising the salilinity and leaving it for a while to see if it stops the progression (also hope that lack of food) more coraline will also force this algae to die off and eventually no longer to exist in the tank, sadly i also think that if this tank is contaminated it will do no good removing the coral already in the tank.
HOWEVER the main effect of clod is the fact that it will stop the coraline from protecting from erosion but! in your fish tank this wont matter as much unless it effects the animals in your tank be patient and wait it out as you would other non lethal bacterial infections in your tank (cyano included)

btw i mean rais the salinity on the infected rock in a seperate tank or if your willing leave it to dry out

wait, is ricodera the same as shrooms?
how old's the tank?
when did you start noticing it?

if so that does look more like encrusting sponges than CLOD.

i know my answer isn't as......full bodied, as copperhead's but i can offer an eperinced opinion and i feel that that's just sponge, seen it alot in figi rock recently.
