I used to enjoy speaking with intelligent people but now there seems to be very few anymore.

How much worse is it going to get and will it ever go back to the way it was when people cared about their intelligence?

I grew up around Chemists, Electrical Engineers, Psychiatrist and Computer Science majors who taught me a lot during the early seventies about everything. But know days I have a hard time finding people as smart to talk to.

The founding fathers did not specifically establish the United States as a "Christian Country." But their thinking was in the "Paradigm" of Christianity. Their moral law and order were within the Christian tradition and Paradigm. Their way of thinking was greatly effected by Christianity.
This is what is being lost. Public Schools are part of the problem here. The Consitution says that the government will not have an "established religion." But clearly the Established Religion of the American Government is not neutrality, its secularism. Just sit in on a Public School history class.
We have raised at least one generation with ideas that separates them from the "Christian Paradigm." Therefore the thinking is confused, the law is confused, and people are generally confused.
As Muslims and other groups become part of the make up of America, the shift continues away from the Christian SENSE of things .
Things continue to get worse as we stray from the Christian Paradigm.

(Your answer according to the unpublished book of Joan)The original places of higher learning were the churches, synagogues, mosques. temples, and other religious places of worship. Even the Qumran caves at the Dead Sea hold writings and are a religious treasure in themselves. The only people who could read or write were the monks who copied the first books. From the religious institutions came universities and colleges of all sorts. Even such innocuous subjects as music can be traced back to chants and harmonies taught to and by those who pray who believed that those who sing their prayers are praying twice. When you turn away from religion you are also turning away from knowledge. It may get worse but it will get better because all things change. Cultures grow and die. People mature. I believe there is hope, maybe even in the generation that is growing up in our grade schools at this very moment.

I would point more at the political arena for the apathy, ignorance, and anger many people seem to carry with them these days

but greater education will only lead in the direction of more atheists

people want some truth, which is why things like Atheism are appreciated today in ways it never was before ... many educated people in the past still held to their religous beliefs while understanding how the earth came about and where life on this planet was derived from, and it wasn't an issue for them ... so they had no need to send their child to church to learn morals that were already ingrained in their up bringing ... and that moral compass is all we really need to pass onto our children

supernatural stories, not so much

"As atheism grows in America so does it's ignorance"
Are you referring to Atheism's ignorance or America's ignorance?
1) Atheism doesn't do ignorance.
2) America's ignorance is a direct result of the majority of its inmates believing in The Invisible Sky Jockey.

"I used to enjoy speaking with intelligent people"
Stop cruising the secular world - you'll feel much more secure and intelligent in your Fundie pond.

"will it ever go back to the way it was when people cared about their intelligence?"
That question shows NO intelligence.
Humanity will never go back to the way it was unless a cataclysm throws all knowledge and communication outa the window and we go back to cave-dwelling and parasites again realise there's good money to be made from religion IF you can keep a straight face.

So because I or whoever chooses not to believe in god or follow a religion they are ignorant??.. WOW!!...that’s a pretty ignorant and narrow minded statement to make...Linking ignorance to Atheism is showing your ignorance.... Maybe you should look up the word Atheist...and any other religion or non-religion your going to try to link to ignorance... How about you address the real problems that lead to a less intelligent youth... and leave peoples choice to believe in God, Buddha, Allah or who ever or whatever they choose to believe in out of it...

I believe it is the rise of Christian infiltration of our secular government that is causing the rise of ignorance. Bush is a religious fanatic and is a fool. The government is being populated by graduates of Liberty University, a mediocre at best law school, without the proper qualifications other than a degree from LU.

Tell me, would you like to return to the Middle Ages when the Church reigned supreme? Read some history!

Do you mean you used to speak with them over the internet?

Computers have gotten too easy. You used to need a brain.

Atheism results in a completely materialistic outlook, leading to a preoccupation with entertainment. Inevitably people become shallow and self-centered. They also tend to stop absorbing information after college. They do tend to be pretty ignorant. a lot of atheists don't know much about life.

Most of the people that I know are trying to expand their knowledge. More people than ever are able to go to college. They are actually getting smarter. This is one that I will have to disagree with you on. That is pretty rare
