He was missing for three days and came back barely able to put weight on the leg with no visible injury. He has gotten better but cannot jump or climb easily and frequently has to rest. He is a big cat: tall, long and hefty w/o being fat so the injury will likely not heal properly. Is there any remedy short of a vet visit which I cannot afford? Maybe baby aspirin daily or something else?

Aspirin can KILL your cat with the terrible effect it has on cat's kidneys.

A ligament sprain takes a long time to heal (months). If the problem is from a bite you can get an abcess within a few days and that must be treated by a vet with antibiotics.

If you are so financially strapped that you can't afford vet consultation when your cat is obviously injured and not feeling well you could at least keep him inside so that he is not exposed to injury. He is your responsibility and you need to set aside funds for any emergency care he might need.

Aspirin, Tylenol and other human pain killers can be toxic to the point of deadly to a cat. DO NOT medicate the cat yourself. The meds build up in a cat's kidneys and can cause significant damage.

Your cat needs to see the vet. In the meantime, put him in a confined space like a bathroom or, better yet, a pet tent with nothing to climb on or jump from, with everything he needs to be comfortable so he doesn't further injur hmself.

No aspirin to cats without a vet OK--it can be toxic. He could have a fracture and may or may not need surgery or splinting to fix. You really need to borrow money from a family member or friend and at least have him looked at--then make a decision based on what the vet says and what you can afford to do...there may be several options.
