His obituary (free), death certificate, marriage certificate (both cost something, varies by state) may mention his parents. His SSN application almost always will; his exact birthdate and place, employer and address at the time, father and mother (maiden name.) It is the most accurate and most expensive of the four.
Write if you need advice on how to get any of them.

If you know the town or village in the Netherlands, try writing the town clerk, and/or the local priest. Many times these people can access records, and give you further information. If you are really lucky, they may even have records going further back.

I have a hard time with finding my dad's side of the family, mainly my grandpa's. My grandpa is in his 90's and he cannot remember what the origional last name was (It was changed from a Russian name to a French). Sometimes you just can't get into your past. Good luck.

His SSN application, $27, should have his father's name and his mother's maiden name. His death certificate might have them. His marriage record might have them. The article about his wedding in the local paper's society pages, on microfilm in the library, may have them. You could post his name, DOB and the places he was born in and lived in (town, COUNTY, state) here and someone might find him on the census. That isn't as good as the SSN app, but it is free. It isn't as good because if he lived with an uncle and called him "Dad" because his parents died when he was young, he might be on the census with relation "son" instead of "nephew".

crazy as it might seem, mormans sure do have a ton on family trees... they baptize for everyone out there dead...so they may have some info in their data bases.. in fact they consider it a "ministry" sort of thing to help people look for relatives.
