I have done extensive lists of places to go in Sacramento, so go to my profile and look through my answers, or do a search for Sacramento.
One place you will not want to miss is Fairytale Town, and right across the street is the Sacramento Zoo. If you are going at the end of August or the beginning of September you will want to go to CalExpo -it has rides, exhibits, great food, concerts, comedians, dancers and entertainers and much more you'll want to see. Arden Fair Mall is very close to there (around a quarter of a mile) and a Chinese Hawaiian/American buffet between Arden Fair and Cal Expo is Luau Gardens and very yummy food!
The art scene is great in Sacramento, especially on Second Saturday. That's the 2nd Saturday of each month. All the galleries (around 90 last I counted) are open, and so is the Crocker Art Museum, which is close to Old Sacramento, and the Railroad Museum (which most people say is the best in the world.) I allow email if you have more questions.

Old town sacermento is nice. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom isn't far, bout 1 hr... The Jelly Belly Factory is in Farereild, 20-45 mins away. Could drive down to San Fransisco for a day. Train museum in Old Sac. Lake Berryssa the Sacermento Mall, the Capital, Sacermento Zoo (the fairytale place across the street, is probably too childish for an 11 yr old)
Hope this helps!

The Railroad Museum in old Sacramento is better than average
for this type of place. They have steam engines and various cars from along ways back. Another type of museum is the Air Museum at the former McClellan AFB (now McClellan Air Park) off of Watt Ave. The usual type of museum is the Crocker Art Gallery. It is near Capitol and 3rd downtown. Don't miss Old Sacramento which is to the west of I-5 freeway which is mostly shops in restored buildings. It is accessible from the tunnel .
beginning at the Holiday Inn if you are on foot. There is lots of
parking. Eat at the Spagetti Factory on J St and 19th

You should go into a train museum in old town sacramento to learn about the monorail and stuff like that. Also capital building is there and you can get a tour guide and she/he could plan things out for you. There are many other activites you can list. Try searching it and find websites that can help you more.
