You need the International Dialing code, which differs depending upon what country you're calling from. From the US, I think it's 0-1

You need the country code for India, which should be at the front of your white pages directory.

You probably need the city code for the place in India you're calling, which may be in the White Pages, too.

And you follow that with the local number.

Make sure you have a reasonable priced overseas long distance carrier. Usually that is NOT your local phone company. Check out "international telephone calling cards", possibly at your local 7-11 or Kwikee Mart. Each has a different price to other countries, and slightly different ways of dialing.
