Size of the bullet (.310) would just confuse the clerk. Tell the clerk you want 7.62 x 39.
For practice the military surplus rounds with 123 gr. bullets will be fine.
If used for hunting get name brand (Federal, Remington, Winchester) with 150 grain bullets.

The others, except graham that is, are correct. An SKS uses 7,62x39mm cartridges. However even if you didn't know, the guy behind the desk should and would help you get the right ammo.

If you meant to ask what cartridge to ask for, that's 7.62x39. If you really meant to ask what bullet, bores vary, and yours may shoot standard .308" bullets well, or it may need something around ,311". In either case, you'll want to stick with a weight of about 123 grains. This is all pretty basic, and it worries me that you might actually shoot some of these things without first learning a bit more about them. Please be safe.

as they all said its 7.62x39 mm or a 308 caliber short round that the old iron curtain developed, now norinco makes it for china and has for yrs.The best are Russian as they are milled not stamped. The best ammo is Czeh. You have a choice in rounds, target rounds may as well be FMJ and surplus but if your going to hunt deer with it they offer hollow points for this weapon.Try sportsmans choice online.

7.62X39

but I did once see a Albanian SKS that had a grossly undersized bore and wouldn't chamber 7.62x39. I wonder if it was a conversion or maybe a prototype for 5.45X39. I wish I would have bought it when I saw it.

7.62x39mm (.311"). Use European 7.62x39 to get the .311" slug diameter. I would use the ".308"7.62x39 in a Ruger Mini-30.
