yes it is proper at a formal situation to use a salad fork to stratch ones back, ONLY, after said fork is stuck up ones nose.

by jove! that is not the purpose of the fork, you should use the spoon, that way you can scratch up the semi-brown grime that's left of the area you scratched. you'll see it at the edge of the spoon.
