I get the train to and from work, in the morning and afternoon peak hour. Sometimes there is a spare seat next to the window with someone sitting next to the aisle. I will say excuse me, could I sit? I would have thought that person would just slide across a bit, but they stand up to let me pass so I can sit down. This is a nice thing, I just dont know why, I have a bit of a giggle to myself when this happens. I live in Brisbane but will accept answers from all, thankyou.

I mean why do people not just themselves move across to sit next to the window?

because then they're trapped by the window and will have less freedom of movement when they want to get up. by keeping the aisle for themselves, and making you sit next to the window, they're keeping a small bit of power.

sometimes some people dont like to sit next to the windo i know i dont i feel more cramped in. but sometimes people will stand just because they feel as though they need to if im out and awoman come to sit atthe table ill subconsialy stand. or wait till all the woman have seated before i sit. depends on the person. you should ask the person next time why dose he stand

Because they didn't want the window and it's polite to stand to make your way into the seat easier. There are lots of people on commute that want easy access to dashing out of the train upon arrival. It's their choice. Say thank you and take your seat.

It is a bit nice. It could also be train etiquette. Trains rock and roll, and it is polite to stand up and let some one pass you in case they slip or the train take an awkward turn and leave you sitting in thier lap.

They stand so they don't have to stare at your a#s in their face while you slide into the seat.

They don't slide because they want the aisle. If they wanted the window, they would have sat there.

there are people who prefer the window seat, there are those who prefer the aisle seat. those who prefer the aisle seat might not wish to be 'boxed in' when they want to exit.

Sometimes they sit there because they are getting off soon and don't want to bother you.

Maybe because they don't want to give up their seat and you can't get in to yours without knocking their knees so they stand.
