The simplest way to cure severe depression is by visiting a psychiatrist to get a prescription for medication.
Depression doesn't have to do with an inability to love oneself. It often involves previous trauma and life events that are less than satisfactory. Additionally, science has in the past few years discovered a genetic predisposition to depression. The physical cause of depression appear at this point in time to be a "shortage" of various neurotransmitters in the brain. That is why a prescription to adjust neurotransmitters usually best solves the problem.
It may be that you could start with medication until you feel better and then taper it off week by week and supplement it with strenuous exercise to increase endorphins. There are also depression workbooks that may help. And there are over-the-counter medications that can help as well. There are studies on St. John's Wort on the Internet, but this medication is used to treat moderate or mild depression, not severe depression. 5-HTP and Sam-E are other OTC medications that might help. You want to research these before taking them because they are unregulated.
But, for severe depression, medication is the answer and rather than avoid medication, reducing your time on medication may be a reasonable goal.

I gave someone else this answer: the Russians have a way to treat depression which is said to be successful. Get someone to beat you on the buttocks with a stout cane. Yes, it sounds weird but they say it can work.

Exercise until you drop. It doesn't matter what type. Cut grass, run, walk, bike, and work up a good sweat and a heavy breathing rate. Vigorous exercise releases endorphins, a "feel good" chemical in your brain

Exercise helps a lot, especially if you're eating a moderately healthy diet. Cut back on drinking alcohol.

Diet and exercise, and depending on your type of depression, (dark cloud, blah, too sensitive, anxious) some supplements that restore your brain chemistry/imbalance.
