So we got our puppy about six or seven weeks ago. For the first two weeks my brother and I werent home during the day b/c we're in grade school. Therefore, she was home alone all day. Since school left out someome has been with her all day. For the past two weeks (aprox) she has become increasingly jealous of my father. Whenever he comes home from work she flips out. When I hug my father, she whines. When my father and my mother kiss, she even barks. Yesterday, I was showing my dad some pictures (we were standing close) she started to bark and whine. Trixie (our puppy) turns two next month. We got her from our nearby SPCA, and shes a golden lab. Do you have any ideas on how we can keep our puppy from being so jealous? Because she gets so wound up when he gets home, our hardwood floors are getting ruined. Any advice?

This pup sounds like she is not jealous, but concerned someone in the family is getting hurt. Assure her that things are okay when affection is being shared. Include her so she becomes more confident everything is okay with her people.
Also, keep her nails short. Get some rough sandpaper and sand them down smooth. This takes constant vigilance on your part. Sit down on the floor with her ever 3-4 days and sand away. She will love the attention. Dogs seem to tolerate the sanding better than clipping. Some people clip too short and cut into the dog's quick. This is extremely painful, just like cutting into your quick. It's the same sort of pain.

Have your father spend more 1 on 1 time with the puppy. Have him make his coming home a good experience by him greeting the dog in a nice way, such as petting. When the dog acts like this around him, ignore her, if you say something to her you are reinforcing this behavior, totally ignore her when she acts like this. If possible put her in a room alone for about 3 min. Dogs do not know time, then have your father be the one to let her out and give her attention. Any time she acts jealous around anyone ignore her! Then after a bit have that person show her affection as well. But the best thing is ignore the behavior, unless it becomes aggressive, then deal with her by isolating her for just a bit.

Thank you for saving Trixie! Great job adopting from the SPCA.
It sounds like Trixie is more worried about your dad than jealous. Perhaps because he's working and not home with her as much as the rest of you.
When your dad comes home from work, tell him to ignore Trixie until she settles down. Don't rewadr her hyper behavior by talking to her or petting her. Eventually she will learn that she only gets attention when she is being good and calm.

seems to me that your dog is not jealous, he might be lacking a bit of discipline, just a suggestion, but you can try this:, When you know your dad's coming home, you should hold you dog in another room by his collar till dad is in the house and settled down, eventually if you do this every time your dad comes home, he will know to sit and stay till you are all ready to play with him again, you might wants to give him a treat each time he does well, even better get Dad to give him the treat!, then he will know each time dad get home if his good he'll get a treat!

Just keep repeating what you're doing and maybe she'll get used to it? Just a guess.
