ALL kids have a period of stuttering at 3 or 4 years; it is a step in normal speech and language development. It Is called "primary stuttering", is completely harmless, and most (>98%) kids do outgrow it. If it persists beyond 5 or 6 ("secondary stuttering"), an evaluation by a school district speech pathologist is in order.

Sometimes at that age, their brains are going faster than their mouths can get the words out. And that could sound like stuttering. But that's not such a big deal. That'll likely go away when he's about 4 years old with a larger vocabulary.

But, if he is truly stuttering, then he definitely would need speech therapy. I think he's at a good age to start. A good therapist can help him stop stuttering fully.

If you don't correct it when he's young, it's very possible that he'll stutter as an adult.

Talk with his pediatrician. Most counties provide speech therapy for free for children.

Best of luck.

my son turned 3 last month and he stutters a little. Not all the time, more when hes tired or cant think of what hes trying to say. His doctor says hes fine. If youre worried, bring it up next time hes at the doctor.

you might want to have him checked for a significant speech delay or problem. That being said, maybe he will grow out of it. i would caution against anyone who says a three year old needs any kind of intesive speech therapy, a once a week session that's extremely kid friendly for maybe an hour has done my 3 year old wonders in improving speech. the therapist also gives me lots of advice on how to help at home. My son has a articulation problem not stuttering so i don't think the tips i recieved would work for you but you can find lots of places that help young kids.

i wouldn't be too concerned. my friends son started stuttering around this age and now a year later he doesn't do it at all. if you are a little worried just call the ped. and ask some questions about it.

Worried about what? If he stutters, nothing you can do about it.

His elementary school should be able to provide proper speech therapy to help him overcome it. I used to stutter myself, and aside from still having some trouble with words that begin with vowels, I'm otherwise completely cured.

Does he stutter with just a few words or most of them? If it's most of them, I would check with your pediatrician as to getting some testing done. The earlier this is corrected with speech therapy, the better.

My daughter will be six and she still does. She started around 3 years old. If I tell her to slow down and say it again, she does without stuttering... ??

No, you shouldn't worry a whole lot. Your son is only 3. His speech will improve over time, and if it doesn't, there are special classes for kids with speech problems.

Be concerned, but not worry... if it's been going on a while, and nothing you are doing seems to calm him, or relax him - he can go see a speech pathologist. You do realize that it's caused by stress - so don't yell or nag, etc. to him.
