I currently pay $300 per month for health care and it is deducted on my paycheck. If health care became universal, would I still pay $300 for the coverage that I want and also pay more taxes to cover others?

Would I get a voucher for not wanting or using public healthcare?

That would depend upon the system that is implemented. Don't expect to see socialized medicine in the US. That will not likely ever happen. You might see mandatory health insurance similar to the situation in MA right now. Early indications are that it is saving money for all but the most healthy residents since everyone in the state is essentially in the same risk pool.

Generally, systems that require coverage of any type do not allow an opt-out provision as that would defeat the purpose of it in the first place. Social Security would have failed almost immediately if people were allowed to opt out in favor of private plans. Any type of universal health care system will have to be mandatory for it to succeed.

Your withholding tax would be increased to cover the cost, if you want your own insurance you would pay the cost. Your employer may quit sponsoring your plan since it is expensive for the employer even if the employee pays part of the cost.
No you wouldn't get a voucher for not using it. You don't get one for not going to public school and not using Medicaid and welfare.

It would more than likely be part of your federal income tax, which would necessarily be higher. Universal health care would rapidly become so inefficient and over burdened you would also probably opt for additional health insurance and private facilities will pop up to serve people who could afford them. Then we would be exactly where we are today again.

It depends how it is setup. It could be broken down separately like FICA/SSI, or it could be part of the income tax.

Nobody knows, since we are nowhere close to this happening.

I doubt you would get a voucher, but if you had enough money you could always buy private care.

If the US gets universal health care, your taxes will INCREASE to pay for it. The plan you currently have will become VERY attractive and ILLEGAL.
