Christ knows about the response a person has made to him. I believe that salvation is secure when you put your faith in Jesus and repent changing your mind about sin. And that Jesus is the only way. Once accepted there is no getting out. You have a contract. There are those who think you can lose your salvation but I think the passages quoted are in fact loss of fellowship.
Sin is a barrier and response to what Jesus did for us on the cross is the answer to that. The book of life doesn't come with a bottle of tippex.
If you can look at every persons response and know if they are a Christian or not then you will be a very blessed person indeed. You wont find a human that can do that though. We can point the way though. The Bible is the measure.

The authority of the Church rests on three pillars:
Scripture- The Bible is the inerrant word of God and is to be read as the earliest Christians read it: in the light of Tradition and under the guidance of those ordained to teach.
Tradition-the teachings which the Church has preserved and passed down from Christ, His Apostles, and the unanimous teachings of the early Church Fathers .
Magisterium - the teaching authority of the Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
The Church has 7 Sacraments -- "outward signs of invisible grace" and media of sanctifying grace. The Sacraments were given to us by Christ so that we may receive His grace and become more like Him. The Seven Sacraments are:
Baptism
Confirmation -Sacrament of the Seal
Eucharist
Penance
Holy Matrimony
Holy Orders
Extreme Unction
The Church teaches by looking not only at Sacred Scripture, but into History and by reading what the earliest Christians have written, what those who've sat on the Chair of Peter have spoken consistently with Scripture and Tradition, and what they've solemnly defined.
To believe that the Bible is our only source of Christian Truth is unbiblical and illogical

Now you cant just say a prayer accepting Jesus into you life and expect to go to heaven, this lie has fooled thousands and was started by the advasary long ago. Jesus said follow me, right, and he went about doing good, In james it says ( Pure religion and undefiled before god and the father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in ther affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.)
We are responsible for what we think, say, and do!
So I would suggest this little poem
Sew a thought, reap an act
Sew a act , reap a habit
Sew a habit , reap a charicter
Sew a charicter, reap a Eternal Destiny.

Some how I think your information on the Mafia is speculative.
The real point here is whether or not we can control Jesus or not. If we think just because we do the acceptance thing that we are guaranteed to go to heaven, then we are saying that we can control Jesus. It doesn't work that way! We must make our choice (meaning in word and action) every day. Jesus will be faithful on his part, but we must always rely on God's grace and mercy.

Hello, Purple Peace:
We see many quoting John 3:16 while neglecting other scriptures that say Satan will plant counterfeit Christians in church. They will be tempting people to sin because Satan know Sin will disqualify one from Paradise.
Jesus said our righteousness must exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees. Peter says the righteous will barely be saved. Let us read it in 1 Peter 4:17:
For the time [is come] that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if [it] first [begin] at us, what shall the end [be] of them that obey not the gospel of God?
4:18 And if the righteous SCARCELY BE SAVED, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
Judgment day is revealed in a Bible code. Select chapter four at http://abiblecode.tripod.com

The simple answer is Yes. However...
To accept Jesus as your saviour is to want him to change your life. The instruction given to the woman caught in adultery was, "Go, and sin no more."
It is a glib, and perhaps deliberate, misunderstanding of the meaning of Confession to suggest that, having been forgiven, you are then free to carry on as before. True forgiveness is dependent upon true repentance, not cynical manipulation of a system that has grown out of Christ's spirit of forgiveness.

Do you really think members of the Mafia are devout? Practicing Catholicism is just a front. It's the same way they cover-up their activities with a phony business -- a small restaurant in the front, illegal activities going on in the back.
Trust me. If there is an afterlife, there's a special place in hell for devout Catholic Mafioso.

That's pretty much the yarn, isn't it?
As for the Mafia, I'm sure the majority of them are pragmatists. They probably don't spend a lot of time worrying about going to hell for their activities. But according to the Catholic house rules, as long as they confess and do penance, they're in the clear. Other brands of "Born Again" style Christianity don't even insist on that - if those Mafiosos had once accepted Jesus, all their misdeeds simply don't matter. Heaven is for people who believe in Jesus, not decent or worthy or moral people.

Christians have often done sinful things, but the only way to heaven is to choose Jesus, our works are not the way. My understanding of my faith is that we are able to sin if we choose to, but anyone who has had a real taste of Jesus in a meaningful way should allow themselves to be guided by his spirit into a peaceful life, we are asked in the bible to become more like Jesus but many who choose Him do not get good teaching, nor do they read the bible and pray. You have to spend time getting to know Jesus to be more like him. Be not so quick to judge, either, judgment is for God alone.

Jesus said you must be "born again"
- John 3:3
Jesus said you must "repent"
- Mark 1:7
Jesus said you must "become like a little child"
- Luke 18:7
Clearly, someone committing organized crime has not done that, no matter what building they enter or what label they claim.
When I received Jesus as my Savior, I also died to my wicked life and began a journey of faith that required me to follow Jesus.
It was the best thing I ever did.
