I know what water does and why we need to drink water, but can someone please tell me why they say to drink EIGHT glasses of water? Is there any sort of reason as to why we have to drink EIGHT glasses of water as opposed to 6, 7, 9, 10 ect.?

I think that's just a minimum figure. The best way to figure out how much you need to be drinking is to take your weight and divide it by half. That's the amount of ounces of water you need to personally drink per day.

There's proof behind that calculation, but I don't know where it's at right now!! :o)

Normally, a healthy person in a day is expected to drink water at least 1.5 to 2 litres.(your coffee, tea and fruit juices not counted here) It may vary according to the weather and your body need.
When you say, a glass which should normally measure 200 mls. Having this fact, if you say 8 glasses of water that should measure 1600mls(1.6litre) that is normally you will expect a person to drink in a day.
It is a easy way to teach patients and lay people in such a way or otherwise giving them a formula is going to be harder sometime.

its an estimation based upon how much water the typical person loses each day through perspiration, breathing, urination, etc. along with the amount needed each day to help flush the body of toxins produced by the body. it is an estimation, there is no proof or solid # set in stone. im sure that me ,weighing 200 lbs needs more water than my gf who is half my size.. so how do you set a # for every one?

the 8 glasses is based purely on the average bodyweight of Americans and is only for the "sedentary" individual. both science and common sense tells us that athletes and those that exercise regularly need substantially more water than that on a daily basis.

Your body is approximately 70% water (blood, lymph fluid, cellular liquid) which needs to be constantly replenished. You can live for months without food but only 3 days without water. Without fresh water your body cannot cleanse itself of internal toxins.
