Christians please help me understand.?

Question

I just saw a question about a wife who thinks that meditation leads to demon possessaion. A few days ago a woman said that schizophreia is demon possesion. I saw a blog on 360 about the harm of Harry Potter.

Now I know that there are many wonderful intelligent christians, one of them is my best friend. She and I have had many good laughs over people like those.

Please explain to me how religion can make common sense walk out the door? Honestly, I just don't understand. Do these people who obviously possess a below average intelligence just happen to be Christians? They are not the norm, right? Please help me understand.

Look at the history of some of the fringe Christian groups such as Jim Jones, David Koresh, etc. No, they are not the norm. Most Christians are simply God fearing people of faith who go to work every day, raise families, go on vacation and attempt to live their lives out in a peacful manner. Some of us even laugh out loud from time to time. The bible teaches moderation in all things. The people who unfortunately get the headlines are those who go off the deep end so to speak.

Having a little knowledge of ancient texts and languages, I feel I must comment to this question, particularly regading Harry Potter and the previous post regarding witchcraft.

To begin with, the words witch and witchcraft were never actually in the bible, it is a mistranslation for several different hebrew words, including as an example in Exodus 22.18 the hebrew word we find there is mekhashshepheh, which does not mean witch, but rather is a persian form of sorcerer said to make pacts with demons or desert spirits. The word witch did not even exist until at least the 1100's AD, and the original connotation of it is not the meaning of the word today. Other places in the bible we also see other forms, such as a hebrew word for a form of fortune-teller. The first instance of the word witch actually being in the bible was introduced by King James or England in the English translation of the book.

Sorry this is getting long, but secondly, Harry Potter is fiction, it is not real, and has nothing to do with anything people actually consider to be witchcraft or magick. It also includes instance of moral values, friendship, comrodery, and can help to instill reading skills in young readers. Of course, these points are always missed by many who think the books are evil.

I also do not see how meditation can cause demon possession, when in some forms it can also be seen as a form of prolonged prayer, and many sects of christians practice it as a form of becoming closer to God.

I have also seen people say that scitzophrenia is a form of demon possession, I think partly due to certain movies where the person is thought to be scitzophrenic, but it turns out they are possessed by a demon of some sort. Let us not forget these are movies to begin with. Secondly, it is concluded that what is wrong with the person is not a mental illness after all other forms of therapy and tests have been exausted and nothing has worked. Being a pastoral counseler, with a psych degree, who has worked with manic and scitzophrenic people, I can tell you there is a big difference, and if they were possessed by a demon, the medicine and therapy they recieve that does help for mental illnesses would not work in that case

Well, that is my little rant on the subject, sorry for going a little long there but I tend to be a little long winded some days lol.

I would first ask, "Meditation on what?"

Meditation on God's Word won't lead to demon possession, but what if she's meditating on a demon based religion?

Yoga is such a denom based religion.

The Bible talks about demon possession and yes I believe it can cause many types of mental problems.

However, I don't believe its the only cause of these problems.

There are some Christians with less than average intelligence but I don't see that being true based on the evidence I've seen so far.

Some of the things that I have read that were contributed by "Christians" have blown me away. I love the Lord and am a Christian myself. But what in the world would possess ANYONE to pick out schizophrenia and call it a demon possession is beyond me. I believe that many times, Christians, speak what they have heard over the pulpit or from someone they consider "an example" and not what is the absolute truth of God. I would love to know what that same person would say if they or a family member was diagnosed with the same disorder. Years ago, my father, was paralyzed from the neck down. There was a guy from our church who directly told my dad, that him being paralyzed was due to sin in my dads life. That is so wrong...Come on people, if you love the Lord....don't pop off with ridiculous statements or pom pus facts that you have invented. Go consult with the Lord before you let your mouth get away from you.

Those people are the kind that would be extremists no matter WHAT religion they followed (or didn't follow). If they were atheists, they'd be the type that would constantly be proselytizing and belittling people for their beliefs. If they were Muslim, they'd probably be a suicide bomber, or at least sympathetic towards them.

Basically what I'm saying is, those types of people had no common sense to begin with, and have been led astray by other people that are JUST as lacking in common sense.

I once read a book that insisted that having anything related to dragons in your house was satanic, and so is yoga and meditation. WHAT?!

I feel that schizophrenia is a disease that anyone can have, and is no more being evil as depression, cancer and ect..Things like this hit everybody weather there young, old, rich, poor, and ect.
The Bible reads in Matthew chapter 5 verse 45.. That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
People really like to be cruel.

I can't say for sure whether schizophrenia is demon possession or not. Does that make me below average intelligence?

I know, I think the world of you, too. The reason I said that was because Jesus saw everything as being spiritual. He even said that even deafness was caused by a demon. I don't understand the "demon world" so I can't say explain it. Call me dumb.

I don't completely understand what demon possession is although it is recorded in the Bible.

My thoughts about Harry Potter:

I feel that God is dishonored by glorifying witchcraft, especially to children. God tells us that witchcraft is a sin that will cause those who practice it to stay lost. I am not against other type fanticy books or movies but, witchcraft is real.

In Revelation 22:14. Jesus says, "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city (Heaven). Outside are the dogs (sinners) those who practice magic arts (witchcraft), the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

To me it is just the same as enjoying a movie about rape knowing that the person that I was watching it with has gone through the horror of being raped. Witchcraft will cause some to be lost and to not come to Jesus
