seem to think that the only way to get their message across is to insult you and tell you what an idiot you are for not believing just like them?
as soon as someone starts telling me how stupid i am or how much more "vast" their intellect is than mine is i tend to either tune them out or go straight on the defensive.
i think most people are that way.
you are not going to get our minds to open up and be receptive towards you if you come at us that way.
so again i ask why are SOME of you like this? don't you know any better way?

The real problem is that even when they are nice about it, they still come across with the attitude that there way is the only right way, and everyone else is condemned to eternal damnation! That attitude is completely wrong. They are entitled to believe whatever they choose, but so is everyone else, and God simply does not care. God does not want us all to believe the same thing, or be the same or anything the same. God only wants us to be and create who and what we truly are. All paths are valid.....and in God's eyes...all paths are Worthy! *sm*

You're right, most people are like this, regardless of religion (or lack thereof, because there are some pretty rude atheists on here as well).

I think people are like this because that's all they've got. If one doesn't believe the way these people do, then they're "stupid" or "uneducated" or "brainwashed" or they were "indoctrinated."

I also think that some people do this because they're so FRUSTRATED with people not believing the way they do.

The way I look at it is like this:
I'm a Christian. I'm not the smartest person in the world, nor am I the dumbest. There's still a lot I don't know, and I think it would take a thousand lifetimes to know all the things I WANT to know....
And I respect everyone's opinions, whether I agree with them or not.

Yes, I want everyone to become a Christian, I'll admit that freely. I DO have an ulterior motive, lol. However, I still love everyone, regardless of what they believe. This is especially important to me because my own husband used to be an atheist (he is now a non-religious theist). He needs to know that I respect him.

...

But I'm not perfect. I'm sure I've done my share of belittling, too.

"Why is it that SOME Christians?
seem to think that the only way to get their message across is to insult you and tell you what an idiot you are for not believing just like them?"

And....atheists and such don't do the same? Please come off it!! While I do not think a true Christian has any business sounding off in the same manor as many non-Christians do on this site or anywhere for that matter, I can certainly understand it after some of the foul, filthy and down right disgusting things I've seen posted here and elsewhere by non-Christians concerning Christian faith.

Very good question. I think these people get a little too self-righteous. They want to "educate" you on what is "right". I personally am not this way, so I can't really answer your question. Good luck finding someone who will. I completely agree that this is the wrong approach to take.

*edit* I have to say, that if someone claims to be a Christian, that means they know God's love and will want to share this great love with others; so, it would be in a Christian's nature to "convert" others (the great commission given to Christians in Matthew 28:18-20). This should be done with love and understanding not abrasive convincing. Often I am TEMPTED to have a nasty word with the hypocritical people that act that way....

It is really a defense mechanism.

When people resort to insults and self congratulation, they are really showing you that their position is very weak and they can't give you anything of value to pursuade you.

When I get nasty grams from upset Christians or insults, I always reply with a thank you, letting them know that I understand their frustration at not having a logical answer, and believing in something that clearly doesn't make sense.

I agree with you. I am a christian and I just share how I feel nothing more or nothing less. But I have had other Christians bash me over the head because I don't worship their way. The way they act goes against what and how Jesus taught. We are supposed to win people to the Lord through love not self- righteousness

I am sorry that some Christians have damaged their testimony by speaking so meanly. It is not the way to convince someone of their need for a Savior.
I am sorry that you were offended in such a way. I hope you will see the claims of Jesus in a way that is as positive as the message of the Gospel truly is.

I've been a Christian for a very long time and I have never tried to convince anyone to believe as I do. That is a completely individual choice. I'm sorry you've met this type of Christian. I assure you, we arent all like that.

So true. That way never works. I guess next time you should ask them to show you where in the bible Christ ever did that to anyone or show you the scripture where he says we are supposed to do it, It doesn't exist. He told us to love our neighbors. Christians like that chase away more people than they bring to God.
