There are only a few ways to get out of a gym membership. One way is if you can get a note from a doctor that states that you are medically unable to work out. And from the sound of the preferred activities you listed, I am not so sure that will work.

The another way to get out of the membership is if you move. Most gyms will allow you to cancel your membership if you have moved more than (if I remember right) 30 miles from where their facility is located. There again, you have to prove it.

The last thing to consider is how much longer your contract is. If you pay $35 a month and you only have 6 months left of your contract, that would be $210 spent over a period of time. If you cancel your contract early and the penalty is $300, it would probably be more efficient to just pay out the $35 a month and suck it up. If you have another year left to pay, then you would be paying out $420 over the course of the year. Then it would be feasible to just pay the $300 penalty to get out of the contract.

This kind of thing is definitely a lesson learned. Before people sign up for a gym membership, they should try out the place for a week first. Most gyms give complimentary free weeks in order for people to try them out to see if they want to come back.

Either way you go, good luck.

My old gym, had a clause in it that stated if I moved more than ten miles away from the closest gym. I could cancel my membership.

I'd try the note, it might work. You are legally stuck with the terms of the contract you signed, though, so they don't have to let you out of it without paying the cancellation fee.

forget about the Dr's note as you would be about the 1,000,000 person that tried that and failed. you signed the contract, that's what they are for a legal and binding agreement. you knew beforehand that you weren't going to utilize the membership
