I think that some people turn to religion not because of true belief, but because they do not have the strenght to carry the burden of life. We see this all the time, when a loved one dies, an unreligous person turns to God to relieve suffering, not because he/she believes that God exists, but because that they know that they won't live with the pain without an excuse to live on. I suppose what I'm trying to say, and this is putting it badly, is religion a necessary evil?

I see your point. But the reason we are to attend meetings with other people of faith .
And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13: 15-16.
But it is the second part of this very same scripture that is very commonly abused by members in the body of Christ of the religious sector..verse 17
Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.

But ,..Why go to Church?" is simple: to get to know Jesus. To partake in the sacraments to remember and never forget the sacrifice. But manly God actually requires us in the very start in the fourth Commandment on keeping holy the Sabbath-day.. to devote time each week to Him and His purposes. Many do depending on your religious sector Friday,Saturday,Sunday. The work week designated by the government gave us time to practice our faith.

The pure form and foundation that all "churches or religious sectors" follow have strayed at times. But we need to have spiritual growth. Going to church gives us time to join and share in our religious purpose. Now this being said.

Many people today feel that going to Church are following one religious sector is just not for them. They see all churches corrupt in one form or another. We arrive at that point when we perceive ourselves "with no need for religion"

Many feel that if they are left without that weekly remembrance of His great mercy and love. But, if we continue going we are able to get feed the value of salvation. Not every time we go to church are we feed with a fruit that satisfy our spiritual needs to grow.

If you get in a slump at church and you do go.. Remember to not look to the messenger but listen to the message of God. If you do not go to church remember to set a time aside every week to feed your spiritual growth..He also allows us to control our own destinies. This is at the core of His love is it not. As someone said once in his reason for going to church or to set time aside to feed our spiritual growth.. Jesus was crucified and hung on that cross for many many hours. How hard would it be for us to set aside at least one hour to remember him and read and study the word of God.

Is religious practice an unnecessary hell. It does seem to be that way at times. Never stop growing. Never Stop believing.. Live for Jesus do everything you can to follow Him and trust in his words. What is good and works for one person. Does not work for another. If you don't go to church you are going to hell...right... I have been unable to attend church that does not stricken me to hell. No it does not.. lol. silly wabbits..

I have to run..

There is a belief that is unhealthy when it comes to the end times. Paul actually encourages the believers in Thessolinica (who were big on the end times) to focus on what was before them and live Godly lifestyles rather than focus on matters that are more God's affair than ours. Still, Paul reaffirmed that Christ's return was indeed going to happen. This is how I see it. I think it is okay for a person to believe that a 'Tribulation' dispensation will come as long as that belief isn't a driving motivator to all that they do and say. I would have to say that the majority of Christians do believe in an Armageddon, unless they are amellenialists, but they do not allow the belief to so warp them that they cannot think rationally and live a life that is meaningful and helpful to others. To further my point, most U.S. presidents have been Christians. There were some good ones and some bad ones in terms of things, but the U.S. is still looked up to as the world leading nation by most countries. Something must be said about that. I don't think you have a very good grasp on Christians, only what you read about their personal convictions on a site like this. That isn't a very good standard of measurement. You should go make some Christian friends and get to know them and how they live before you jump to such conclusions.

Well for starters no one needs religion in order to survive. We are all animals and would survive in a jungle if we had too. Anyway more about people and religion. Religion does give some people hope that without religion they wouldn't have. It also gives people morals and values. Now some people do just fine without religion and some can't live without it. Now when someone you love dies I don't really believe that religion is exactly what makes them live on but the idea that they might be in a better place. Hints the expression that death should be celebrated not mourned over. Some people can't live on and that doesn't have much to do with religion but more with self control. Religion can be a way to calm people down and to bring people together which wouldn't make it evil. Although religion is a main cause of war and death. Anyway i could go on about relgion but to wrap it up. Religion is just a belief system that can give people motivation to overcome opsticals in their lives but without I feel people as animals fight to survive ( the weak minded is not included) with or without relgion. And every religion is a little different so you have to take that into consideraion as well. For some death can bring damnation and for others death can bring about a new life.

To survive, no. But it does fulfill a need. Sociologically, it has been found that individuals, who have reached their 50's and do not have a developed sense of spirituality/religion, tend to report more dissatisfaction and will actively seek some form of spirituality. I'm sure this relates to their feelings of impending mortality, but I find it interesting that they have consistently reported simply not being as happy or healthy as those who are involved in some form of spirituality.

A major crisis is often a catalyst for those who are non- spiritual. I don't necessarily consider religion a crutch, but a tragedy can definitely change the way an individual views life as they know it. People may begin to question or seek to understand the whys.

I don't think so. The Chinese are doing pretty good and they don't have religion.

IMO, I think almost all religions are built around the fear of death. Turning to religion when someone dies is because the living can't stand the idea that the departed is really gone. They need to feel that the person lives on, somewhere, and that they will be together again. It also helps them deal with their own feeling of mortality, the spector of which is always raised when a loved one dies. Since the advent of theism people simply cannot cope with the idea that when humans die, that's it. Our egos have made us more important than a tree, or a horse, or anyother living breathing entity on this planet when it comes to death.

See I don't see as it a weakness but rather a leap of faith. Personally I am a strong willed outspoken get it done kind of person i am successful I am often called a b....That's the face I show the world but in my private little world I am in awe of the strength of the unseen I have no fear what I can not see I do not believe in the notion of an angry God or jealous God or a guy in the sky.
I think people that have no faith are confined to little boxes. If you can not see or hear it it does not exist. Use to be people thought the world was flat and those 'believers' were ridiculed
I admire Atheist because they do believe and have made peace with it. That is good and they too will live good & love filled lifes. No burning in hell or any of that crap will happen to them they will simply dissappear.
That is not good or bad it just is.

No, religion is just a thing. If you do want to survive (have eternal life) then all that matters is your relation ship with God. You have to be able to let it grow and live God's Word daily. What you say is partially true, some people do turn to a religion to relieve suffering, but deep inside they still have the pain. The only way to really relieve the pain is to turn to God, not a religion.

What people NEED is just what they decide for themselves, and Religion is a personal matter that should be decided by the person involved.

Any time you have people trying to push their thoughts and beliefs on someone else is when you end up turning someone away from religion. If everyone were to just decide and follow through on their own, things would be fine!

No, people don't need religion to survive as there are plenty who don't have religion.

You're right it does take the burden off our shoulders, which is a bonus on top of it being true. But contrary to what you might believe having a belief is not an easy thing. You see when one does not believe in anything but his own opinions, his life consists of simply reacting to whatever the circumstances may lead a person to do. he simply reacts to the buttons that are pushed. He becomes the object of his surrounding. in truth he possesses no options in life as decisions are made for him by the circumstances revealed to him. whereas for those with beliefs, we are always encountered with options and we always have to fight internally to live up to our own beliefs and simply not by animal instincts.

I think religion is a person's (people's) way of explaining what they cannot understand. If there is a senseless tragedy people chalk it up to "God's mysterious reasons" or something similar.

Religion gives people comfort because they can pass on the blame to someone higher. In a way, it's the oldest, most sacred form of scape goating.

It's never been neccessary for me to have a God or spirit but for some people, yes, it is a neccesity.

Hope my answer helped.

i would put it that religion is a necessary good. We all at times ignore God. Those people who have grief are turning to God because they already know he exists. I am not always a good person. However, I have had enough experiences in life to know that God is very, very real. I am 65 years old and still know that God has purpose for my life. I am the reason that I haven't found that purpose. hope you don't wait that long... If you pray to God and ask him to send his spirit to live in you and really mean it, you will have your own question answered....
