I probably won’t purchase the Smart Car when it goes on sale. Yes it is fuel efficient, but at the same time, given its paltry size, I don’t think it would be safe. I think efforts to buy more eco-friendly automobiles are laudable, but I don’t think it should be done at the expense of safety. With the behemoth SUVs out there, which are almost ubiquitous on our highways, buying such a miniature car could be fatal if one were unfortunately to collide with one of them.
The only way that environmentally conscious products are going to compete in the American car market - a consumer body which has become accustomed to luxury, power, and spaciousness - is if the new gas saving and pollution free automobiles are competitive with their traditional fossil fueled competitors in the aforementioned areas. I know we have the technological expertise to do it, but the only thing thwarting the formulation of comparably sized and equipped fuel efficient, and clean burning cars from being created is an oil and gas lobby which encumbers R &D and marketing of such alternative automobiles.

I do like the Smart but I'm not going to be buying one.
I would consider it though if....I lived alone (live with dad and sister) and needed a car (bought a new Corolla in '06).
btw..for those of you complaining about the price...it is to Mercedes what the new Mini is to BMW plus don't forget about the importation duties since the car is built in Europe.

No - it's too expensive for what it is. There are Kia's that seat four that are cheaper and have more power. The Honda Fit is superior in virtually every way for roughly the same money (maybe slightly more).
I think people will buy because they're cute and different, but it would need to be no more than 10K to be a reasonable purchase when you consider the lack of power, two seats, etc.

Nope. It was fun driving one around the cities in Europe but on the highways it was a totally different experience. Lousy acceleration, dismal top speed (barely did 130 kms, about 80 MPH) and bounced and blew all over the road. My kidneys hurt for weeks afterwards.

No.
I was in Europe a fews years back and rented on for myself. It was perfect for the narrow streets and in-city driving.
