I am not certain where you can formally learn, but I know that people fish along the east river. Maybe you could put someting on www.newyork.craigslist and see if you can find someone to teach you. You could also show up and try to make friends with one of the fishermen/fisherwomen.

Good luck

You could go to the fuel marina in Little Neck Bay. There are always folks fishing for snappers there on the pier. I'm sure they will be willing to help out. In Manhattan try Stuyvesant Cove at East 20th Street off of the East River, and in Brooklyn Carnasie Pier. FIrst ask for spearings at the Bait and Tackle shop, buy a float, hooks, and split shots, they go snapper fishing.

Check with NYS Parks and Recreation. They have a kind of learn to fish day in Hempstead Lake State Park (in McDonald Pond). They stock the pond with trout. It's not as close as Queens, but by NY standards, it's pretty close. Take the Southern State Parkway to Eagle Avenue. You can't miss it. Good luck.

Not too many fishermen in nyc? Maybe someone will answer you eventually about 'where', but if not, come on to Nebraska...we all know how to fish! It is so relaxing when the heat or cold are not at their extremes! Good luck!

Go to any place along the area you visit. When the fish come to the surface to breathe take your net and dip them in.

If you go at night, you easy find them by their green glow.
