A Vivitar 285HV at under $100 new is a great classic, sturdy choice.

Alternatively, you could look for a used Vivitar 283. If you go this route, however, make sure you get one of the made in China models(as opposed to made in Japan) to avoid frying your camera's flash circuit. I've been paying anywhere from $20-40 apiece for used Vivitar 283s.

There is the 220 EX Canon flash, which works with the through the lens metering. That could work out well. It's generally around $120ish. It will extend to about 50'ish if not more, so that could be good for your purposes. If you want one with farther range, you'll look into the 430 EX Canon. I would suggest those two as they compensate flash power based off of the amount of light automaticly.

I have a Sunpak flash for an older Nikon that works well and has given good service. They make Canon dedicated flashes as well. Look on www.bhphoto.com.
