Rationally, logically, there can be no purpose unless there is a Creator for purpose requires a plan and a plan requires a Planner.
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell (noted 20th century mathematician, philosopher and Nobel Laureate)
"The purpose of life is to make it what ever you want to make it". No, we can't make real purpose for ourselves any more than a rock on the moon can give itself purpose. We were either created for a purpose or we have no purpose but either way, we can't give ourselves purpose.
If we reject the idea of God, then we are just seeking a feeling of purpose without a reality behind the feeling. If all we want is the feeling, then one day some scientist will invent a drug that will induce the feeling.
But if we accept that God our Creator might exist (even if we don't know for sure whether He exists), then it makes sense that He put this need for purpose into our human nature in order to point us to seek Him.

I think if you ask this question to 100 different people you will get 100 different answers. I think the purpose of life differs in people. Some people may say "to follow god" etc, because they are religious and they live to serve their God and this makes them feel happy and complete.
Personally, I think the purpose of life is to experience as many miracles as possible, laugh, love and truly LIVE (not just exist) and when I am old and wrinkly I cant have any regrets and say "Oh I wish I had done this...." because I am likely to of done it. :)
Like I said its different with everyone! I love this question though because usually most people answer different (including the "42's"- loving the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy reference ;p)

The purpose of life is to make it what ever you want to make it.
That is the beauty of life no one can tell you what to do with it because its your choice!
