I saw this and felt sorry for Pits. I would never own one and see a reason to stop breeding them. Now I feel stronger that we need to stop "Back Yard PIT Breeders" What are your thoughts?

we do need to stop all the irresponsible breeders in the world. believe it or not there r breeders out there that r responsible. they check on the pups. they place them in homes before they r born. they know what to look for in dogs. y should we stop breeding an entire breed because some people have no clue what they r doing. some breeders breed for champion bloodlines. and try to avoid health problems. but people like the one in that question shouldnt even be able to own dogs. especially pit bulls.

I am terrified of being responsible for our girl when we breed her! We are going to use Whelpwise and scourer the countryside for a vet tech or someone to be here who KNOWS whats going on! I don't want to lose my girl!

People do NOT understand how much responsibility they assume when they choose to breed. There's a lot to it and you should NOT do it if you can't do it right.

As far a Pit's - well, I worked in a DA's office and a little girl who had played with 2 dogs was killed when she got off the bus one day. Someone was using them to fight and then let them run free all day. The breed has gotten a bad rap but I still wouldn't have one. I have two VERY BIG dogs and I adore them, I know they could do some damage if provoked but I keep my pups where they should be - at home, in the house or inside of our yard (in a fence). Sigh, why can't people who own dogs be more responsible!

I agree completely. It is the same where I live. The shelters are FULL of Pitts and Pitt mixes that do not stand a snowballs chance in h*** of finding a home. It is heartbreaking.

In addition to that, many homeowners insurance companies will not insure homes that have Pitt Bulls so more of them end up in shelters.

I would support only allowing Pitt Bull breeding by the top, most reputable breeders in the country. They would have to be AKC dogs, no mixes, and only go to homes where they are guaranteed to be neutered or are show dogs, so the people are guaranteed to be knowlegable about the breed.

It is easy to decry treatment of Pitt Bulls, but it is hypocrisy when it comes from "lovers of the breed" who are not aware of the realities of the over breeding of this dog.

I'm not certain that the statistics sited were accurate, but I have rescued countless pits from shelters and fighting rings. They are "pit" iful animals, because they have been over breed and over exposed to situations that now make them targets of the media and irresponsible people, in general.

Although, I am not in the least bit fearful of pits, I would no longer want to own one for fear that if the dog should be put in a situation where it needs to defend itself, I would have a major issue on my hands.

Unfortunately, pits may never overcome the negative stigma surrounding them. And I do agree that "Back Yard" breeders need to be dealt with, severely.

I don't think just Pitbulls should not be bred by backyard breeders, but ALL breeds. Backyard breeders are creating inferior specimens of dogs. They are not concerned with sound temperaments, healthy puppies or breed standards, they are concerned with making $$$$$!!!
Pitbulls are great dogs when bred correctly, but backyard breeders will breed an aggressive dog, even though they should not.
That is the key here. It isn't the breed itself that is bad, but the breeders that breed without sound temperaments in mind during breeding.
You can breed a highly aggressive dog of any breed, not just pitbulls, so people need to leave this to the professionals that know which dogs should be bred, and which should not.

Did you get your copy of Dog Fancy ? It had some good stories in it. I have to tell you I did have five Pitt's at different times of my life, and they are great dogs, we never did any breeding , they were just family pets. I think its' mean to fight a dog and I feel sorry for the dogs, when the owners are that stupid to do that. I love dogs and right now I have a 5 year old Rottie , the best dog in the world

We need to stop irresponsible breeders of all dog breeds! Don't ban the breed, maybe ban the breeder.

The dogs are only bad because us humans make them that way. If they are trained to fight since they were puppies then that's what they are going to do. I don't think that we should ban them or kill them all. I do think that the people who train them and watch and bet on them should be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
