Depends on the model - you may get more for a luxury car, Honda or Toyota from Carmax than you would from a dealer. Carmax knows that those cars remain in demand and decide to recondition them and resell them rather than getting rid of them at auction.

On the other hand, you could get less for something like a Ford Taurus, Dodge Neon, any Kia or anything older than 7 years than from a dealer. On those models, Carmax will give you a low ball value because they know that the car will fetch more at auction.

Since you can't negotiate with CarMax, find out the lowest possible wholesale price for your vehicle and if Carmax offers you more - take the deal and they offer you less - go elsewhere.

If you sell it to a dealer you'll get wholesale only. Don't be fooled by what a dealer quotes as the appraised value on a trade-in. It's basically a meaningless number. Ask for the straight-up buy now price from them. Then sell to the highest bidder. In most cases, the offers won't vary by much.

You are better off trying to retail the unit. Dealers will pay you wholesale blue book, and if that particular unit is not selling well could be lower.
