dr prescribed prednisone therapy, for aggravated taste buds, due to an allergic reaction. the therapy started with 3-10 mg x2 daily, i am down to the 2-10mg x2 daily and i still have that hyper, racing feeling . does anybody know how much longer this will last or if there is anything i can do to make it not so bad? what would happen if i just stopped taking these meds? just curious on that, i know they said it was dangerous, but, how?

the hyper feeling will diminish as the dose diminishes. Stopping prednisone suddenly can result in seizures, coma and death, don't recommend stopping suddenly.

Prednisone may cause a person to have a 'hyper' or 'racing' feeling. The correct dose of prednisone in your case - however - is 60 mg daily for 5 to 10 days. There is no need to 'taper' - gradually reduce the dose of prednisone when it is taken for only 1 or 2 weeks. It sounds as if you are still having symptoms because the dose of prednisone prescribed was too low. If this is the case stopping the prednisone certainly will not help your 'aggravated taste buds' - but it should stop the hyper and racing feeling. It is not dangerous to stop prednisone - as noted above - when it is taken only for 1 or 2 weeks. It takes 3 or 4 weeks at a dose of 60 mg of prednisone daily to suppress the adrenal gland's production of cortisol. If you were to take prednisone 60 mg daily for 1 month and abruptly stop you run the risk of an adrenal crisis - as you will not have sufficient cortisol in your system. An adrenal crisis is a medical emergency - but again - it does not sound as if this is a risk for you - given how little prednisone you have taken.

No prednisone I ever took made me feel hyper, or racing. Does your doctor know this? I would call his office and ask his nurse, or at least ask a pharmacist. I don't believe it's supposed to do that at all, but just calm down inflammation.

Those feelings will stop within a couple of days of your finishing the meds and will lessen as your dosage decreases.
Stopping before you complete the course of treatment will make it less likely your taste buds will recover
