I have straight/little wavy hair but i straighten it everyday. I've done this for about a year and i usually don't straighten it everyday over the summer. I now have split ends and my hair breaks off. My aunt told me that i'm damaging my hair..what happens when my gets damaged and are there any "long-term affects" ?

when you damage your hair, it starts to fall off...the long term affects could be becoming bald....

Almost everyone has that so don't worry it isn't too big of a deal. Your hair is damaged from the heat of straightening it almost everyday, and also if you blow dry it. There are really no long term effects of it but you have to watch it and take care of it so it won't be too damaged. First you need to trim off the damaged ends. I have very long hair so once about every 2 or 3 months I need to go in and get the ends trimed. I also have a stylist that will pick out any split ends in my hair. Even if its not very noticeable but this does improve the health of you hair alot. There are usually little white tips on these end refered to as "white ends" and you should cut as many of those off as you can. Its really impossible to get every single one but if you can do a small section everyday and your hair will be alot healthier. Now to keep it this way and make sure its strong you can do a deep conditioning treatment once every 2 weeks. You can go to the salon and do this, or buy at home hot oil treatments! Take extra care when washing your hair as well be gentle on it because hair is very fragile when wet. And to prevent alot of damage you can let it air dry, this is alot less damaging than blow drying. You can still continue to straighten your hair but if you would like it to stay straight for about a year, my sister had this thing done at the salon that can keep your hair straight I can't remember what its called. But if you get this done once it will last a long time and be much less damaging than if you use your straightener everyday, but its not cheap. You can also buy some shampoos that make your hair stronger, and prevent damage. I use Panteene's new damage control conditioner, and Garneir (not sure on spelling) has one that makes your hair stronger. Hope this helps good luck! I know its alot of work but its very worth it!

No not really, but my older sister hair used to be really long then she started straighten it everyday and she stopped and a lot of it broke off alot and her hair is taking a long time to grow. So there is that possibility that your hair will take about a year and a half to go back to the length that it was at. Other affects will be like you went and got a trim today and by 5 days you have a bunch of split ends again.

My hair is damaged from doing the same thing and making it blonde. Just deep treat it. Make sure you use hair ties that don't have that metal piece bc that rips hair too. Use a leave in hair conditioner after the shower. That should make an improvement.

The only real way to fix it is to stop straightening it so much and keep cutting it untl the damaged parts are gone.

For the hair i use the sunsilk..They have one for dry hair..perhaps when your done taking a shower you hair gets a little bit poofy.I have the same problem.I was terrified when i had a split end.But go to a store that sells shampoo and look for sunsilk and find out which one you'll need. You could also get a new haircut and treat it better.Butif your going to straighten it all the time then get it chemically straightened at a salon

You trim off the damaged ends and learn to treat it better. Start by getting a good stylist to help you work with your hair's natural tendancies instead of trying to change it so much.
