Why do they have to feel like they are losing a part of themself in the process... it's really quite the contrary, I would think.

Long answer alert!! My apologies but this is a subject where misunderstanding is rife and women deserve a cogent discussion of why men get so weird.

I don't feel like you can stereotype men's reactions to that degree. Men are brought up in this country, generally speaking, to be "real men": no crying, independent, sparsely spoken with John Wayne being the role model. To be vulnerable is extremely frightening for guys, particularly younger men who haven't figured out yet that they aren't obliged to be John Wayne. Love is the essence of vulnerability and that is supremely scary for John Wayne and his ilk. Roll that together with all the political correctness of the current times and it's just down right terrifying. A huge number of men don't understand that there is sort of an unspoken "natural order" to the relationships between men and women that is diametrically opposite to what is PC. The women's movement was a fabulous success for women and I applaud your success. However, with the destruction of the Father Knows Best mentality that had prevailed until that time, men were left without a well defined role vis a vis women.

My point is this: men are in a very ill defined world and with all the conflicting signals, it's no wonder fear comes to the fore.

When you find that out, will you let me know? Actually,. I was reading this great book called "Why Men Won't Commit" by George Weinberg, PhD. He talks about something called the Masculine Pretense which is a set of attitudes that "he" feels he must show the world in order to be a man. He is independent, strong, free and in control. It includes the idea that people can't hurt him emotionally and that people can't move him deeply (like in LOVE) That's his take on it. It's a good book...you'd like it!
