Calories come from the food we eat in the forms of carbs, fat, protein, and alcohol. I've always assumed that it is easier for the human body to make fat from fat than any other type of food, but this is only a guess. I'm assuming the body has to spend some calories to convert carbs and protein into fat, whereas maybe it doesn't have to do any conversion to make human fat.

Yes. The reason is not that it stores directly without making a conversion. The reason is this: your body needs nutrients and energy. Nutrients are carbs, protein, fibre, and limited amount of fat (Omega 3 etc. mostly). When you eat sth., your body takes from it the nutrients it needs. The excess is stored as fat. So if you eat anything in excess, it will become fat. But fat is easy to be in excess, because you need less of it, since it doesn't have the necessary nutrients.
Apart from that factor, comes the energy balance. If your body has an excess of calories, it will make fat. If it has a lack of calories, it will not necessarily burn fat. It will only burn fat if the nutrients it gets are sufficient. Otherwise it will burn lean muscle, which in turn helps you burn LESS fat. So, if in the certain amount of calories you get, there are enough nutrients from carbs and proteins, you are OK. But if there is too much fat in them, you don't get enough nutrients, so you burn lean muscle, store the fat and slow down your metabolism. I hope I explained it well, it sounds a bit complicated.
The idea is that you must get the amount of calories needed, but it also needs to be balanced and not fatty.

Usually fat food takes longer to digest than carbs and so it is less likely to be stored as body fat as against carbs, if used the right way. Regardsless of what we eat, the body does try to process in the same way but the end result varies.
