some of these have already been said, but anyways:
-- scraps of wood (i've used little pieces of scrap plywood from my dad's workshop-- and if u have some old tshirts or clothes, u can stretch and staple them over the wood)
-- cardboard- flatten a box, if u have gesso, prime the cardboard with it.
--not sure how selective u are in ur hatred of paper, but i know that usually u can get free matte board from framing shops. my mom goes there about once a week and picks up a TON!! they usually just throw it away so don't mind giving it away--u should probably call first though
--another paper product: newsprint--you can also make a collage of newsprint (tissue paper, magazine clippings, old book pages, comic books, old sheet music, etc..) and paint on top of that. here's a bit of an example, though it looks a bit more cartoony or crafty- it shows the "collage" sort of idea:

--you can get some old books at libraries (most have old books that no one borrows anymore for sale). schools / teachers usually have random old books that they don't mind parting with. u can use these as sketchbooks as well as using their pages for collages that can be painted on.
-- go to a thrift store or a garage sale and pick up things like old frames, vases, bottles, or articles of clothing. paint right on the the glass or clothing, or you can used the fabric to stretch over plywood.
PAINT ON ANYTHING!!! well you know what i mean

Get a 'fake' wall up. They did it in a museum where the artist did a mural and after a month or so they needed the white walls again so they put up this fake wall in front of it.
Expensive but it is an idea.
Besides that canvas is very cheap. Just buy the cheapest non stretch fabric you can find and paint on that. It will do just fine.

You can get plain or colored tiles at the home depot for very little money- those are fun- use acrylic paint and a clear varnish when you're done.
You can use these boards that I've seen at craft stores- they are particle board with a dry-way like primer on them.
Try thin cotton or silk fabric and dye- it's kind of like water colors, and so very good for landscape, and you might even end up with some wearable art!

you can paint on a number of objects, such as wood, shoebox, plastic. I also read somewhere on the web that some guy painted on food, such as tortillas.
