The guy I like smiled back, but I think it was just a polite smile... does that necessarily mean that he's not interested? There've also been other things that he's done that may have hinted at him being interested (standing very close to me when it wasn't necessary, for one), but I've got no experience with this stuff, so I'm not sure if I'm reading too much into nothing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!

You are never going to necesarilly get over being nervous. Even if you do get up the guts to say hi, until ya'll talk alot and become comfortable, you are still going to be nervous. You have to make a move INSPITE of that.

While asking him out may seem as far fetched as hoping on the next flight to the moon for you, you can just say a simple "hey" or "whats up" next time you see him in passing. If he is all up on you again, just say "u know that thing called personal space is so overated, b/c you smell great" or something like that. Just a lil one liner to let him know you are funny and obviously dig something about him. Play it cool, casual, but talk to him every opprotunity you get, even if it's just "hey, whatcha doing this weekend.... such and such is going on". If he likes you, he will seize that opprotunity and get to know you better and ask you out. If he doesnt pounce, maybe he's just not ready. Good luck!

he may be doing those things to see how you respond, to see if you are interested. so you need to respond back to let him know you're interested. We he is standing close to you brush some invisible dust off his shoulder, ask his advice on something, ... then see how he responds back.

If you're interested in him, you will have to start giving some of your own signals.

He might be nervous at your rejection of him if he comes on too obviously.

forget about your self confidence. you need to act a bit aggressive and relaxed. I don't think it could create any problem for you, to be the interested one! always remember to be careful and to protect yourself.
