I am considering a move to Austin , but it seems expensive. Is San antonio cheaper? i'd rather live in the burbs or country but near by one of the two. In a place that is expensive. Any areas to stay away from in San antonio? Whats your take on both cities?

I went to dental school in San Antonio. Texas is nice either way. I liked San Antonio because of the River Walk and it is just a beautiful town at night. I remember sitting up at Fort Sam Houston and looking down into downtown San An. Gorgeous.

San Antonio is a better place for the kids (except if they're Asian since there aren't really many Asians in S.A.). There are more attractions like the zoo, SeaWorld, Fiesta Texas, Schlitterbahn, etc. Austin is geared toward DINKY types and a college-aged demographic. In general though, Austin is much more expensive and the job market is probably better (of course that depends on the position) and noticeably higher paying (for instance an IT job that would pay $70k in Austin might pay only $50k in S.A.). Military related positions are in much more abundance in San Antonio, but that's not what I do. Something possible to consider instead is the liberal Austinite "current and ex-military-hating, non-agreeing stomping" mentality.

I've lived in both cities during the past 10 years. Love both of them, but prefer Austin -- it seems to be more relaxed than SA. I found that renting an apartment is a bit less expensive in SA than Austin. Austin's burbs are fantastic. Living in SA? I'd stay on the north side.

Personally, I'd stay away from San Antonio. While it may be cheaper to live in, the barrio is far from a safe and clean place to live. Why not move to New Braunfels or San Marcos, close enough to commute to either San Antonio or Austin, but better than living in either of those places.

Both cities are kewl. I'm in Austin and you can find cheap rent here. San Antonio is booming since NAFTA. The new Toyota plant out there has pretty good starting salaries.

Here's an Austin apartment complex that's pretty reasonable. They're not down town but I liked the complex.

I am from the Austin area and have lived in both places..Austin is musical capitol of the world, ahs many free events, and is ecologically concious..It is a very pretty town..and alot of hills and lakes there...Many areas such as spicewood springs, jonestown etc if you want to live in the country..Alot of waterfalls, creeks rivers etc...You must search on the net for barton springs...and zilker park..to get a little view of the town..I would definately recomend Austin!
