Migraine headache. They usually last a day and they won't bother you by calling you and they won't worry.
But you really should go to work.

You broke a tooth eating a toasted bagel for breakfast and have to go for an emergency dental appointment, so you won't be in work until about lunchtime. At lunchtime call again and say you're still in the waiting room, it's incredibly busy so you're going to take the nurse's advise and try a private place on the other side of town, and you're probably not going to make it in. Your boss will probably thank you for keeping them updated!
A good one to get you out of just the morning (and have a lie in) is to say that the kids next door put a football through your front window by accident, and you've got to wait for the glass people to come and fix it.

The problem with lying is that you usually get caught in it somehow.
If someone else can cover your shift for you, you should find a replacement. Otherwise go to work. What happens if you are really sick a couple of days later?

you have an ingrowing toe nail and you cant walk properly, you have made an appointment at the doctors to have it removed, but that not for a couple of days???? that way you dont have to fake a sick voice on the phone and you can have a couple of days off.

Set your alarm for 2am, call and leave a voice-mail that you've been up all night with "stomach issues" and you can't make it in.. When they ask the next day you work, you claim the food poisoning, which does go away quickly.

Food poisoning's always good. It's really unlikely to last longer than a day, and the "symptoms" are unpleasant enough that no one will expect you to fight through it and come in, the way they might with a cold.

You have been bitten by something that you cannot identify and it's swelling horribly and you have to get it checked out as you are freaked out and really quite nauseous..
Works every time (but only once!)

If you have kids tell your employer that your child minders' kids have got nits and you can't send your kids there until the childminder has got rid of them and you can't get anyone else to look after them.
