China won't beat English as an international language because to do so China would have to become a superpower. This is impossible due to the same reasons that the Japanese Empire couldn't become a world power except for a seemingly brief year or two...complete lack of natural resources.

Even a small bit of research will show that China is going to run out of over 20 of the 40 vital natural resources a nation needs for complete independence within 15 years. Unless they engage the Russians or someone in a war for territorial increase (and the natural resources that go with that) they will be in the same boat as the Japanese, depending on the goodwill of the world to trade what they have (labour) for what they need (ores, fuel, technology).

I don't see Chinese beating out English any time soon. Besides English being the current "lingua franca" of the world (in use in the EU, Africa, and India in addition to Canada, UK, and USA) the other widespread languages in use in the world--French, Spanish, and German, share one important aspect with English--the Latin Alphabet. I think native speakers of those languages would gravitate toward English instead of Chinese because of the common alphabet if anything. And the same for English speakers looking to learn another language.

English has never been an ideal language, but it is very successful for many of the same reasons.
Most languages evolve as new ways of thinking become popular or necessary.

English is the language of computers and engineering. Sorry, but English will eventually win.
