It depends on the country you are in. In some countries it is illegal, except for very narrowly defined terms of reference.

For instance, in Germany, euthanasia is used for dogs that have two factors coming together

1. They are terminally ill
2. They are in great pain and suffer.

This is the only valid (LEGAL) reason for putting an animal to sleep. Anything else attracts a prison sentence up to 2 years. You see, Germany as a nation has done some growing up.

If a dog is ONLY terminally ill, make it comfortable and give palliative care.

If a dog is ONLY in great pain, but can be operated to give it quality of life, have him operated or treated in an appropriate way.

And only if both factors come together do I call it "good death".

Anything else is murder of a companion animal, disposing of them because they have become inconvenient for somebody.

If a dog is aggressive, have it desexed and RETRAIN IT.

That is why we need to stop the problem at the root, we need to stop indiscriminate, irresponsible breeding.

Maybe not illegal but certainly not something one should do unless the dog has been proven to be aggressive, has killed people or pets. There are other options to putting a healthy, non-aggressive dog to sleep. There are many dog lovers in the world that would give them a good home if you just search for one and investigate the home and approve it.

No, it's not. But it is not something anyone should do lightly. We had to put my Dad's dog, Lucy, down about 3 months ago because she showed some human-agression towards the neighbor kids, and also Dad's grandkids. He was terrified that she would bite and injure one of the children severely. It was horrible - she was the best dog ever for a lon long time, and we both cried at the vet while it was being done.
However, even as sad as that was, I think it was necessary - she could have severely injured or killed a small child.
We tried to find her an adoptive home, but since she was old (13) and kind of senile, and also part pit bull, (No, I don't want to hear it. Save it. She was a wonderful dog, and dissing her breed would be dishonoring her memory), no one would take her.

No, shelters do it all the time, including "no Kill" shelters. But, if you just want to put one to sleep because you can't keep it, well that is a whole other subject, and while not "illegal" it is just messed up. Most vets will not just whack a dog/or cat, I know of one who will say he puts the dogs to sleep, and he actually places them out at his discrection, after all the previous owner signs away ALL rights to an animal that is being euthanized.

Nope. It should be, but it's not. I work at a vet clinic, and we see a ton of people who want to put their healthy dogs to sleep, mostly just because they are sick of them. We refuse to do it if there is not medical reason, but a lot of clinics in the area want the money, so they will put the dog to sleep. If the owner wants it done, it's not illegal. They usually make up a reason and put that in the medical record.

Also, a lot of physically healthy dogs are euthanized because of their temperament. And millions of healthy dogs are euthanized in animal shelters across American because there are just not enough homes for them.

No, because sometimes dogs with bad aggression problems are put to sleep.

It's up to the discretion of a vet which animals get put to sleep - no vaguely decent vet would put an animal to sleep unless it was ill or incurably aggressive.

If someone brings us an animal to put to sleep for no good reason we try to get it rehomed - you can't just send the person away because they'll either take it to someone else to get the job done or worse, do it themselves.

I think it is legal but if anyone wants to get rid of a dog then put it up for adoption. Plus the vet would ask what is wrong with it and then they would just sell it cuz its healthy.

why would you want to put a healthy dog to sleep?, if you don't want it take it to an animal re homing centre so it can get a nice home, im not sure a vet would put a healthy dog to sleep unless it had a tendency to attack

The pound puts healthy, unwanted pets to sleep every day. So if anyone wants a puppy, i'd send them to the humane society to adopt a puppy/dog/cat/kitten that is in need. It really is a Life or Death situation.

Probably not, but you would be hard pressed to find a vet to do it. It would be ethically and morally wrong

3-4 MILLION healthy dogs and cats are put to sleep in shelters every year because they don't have homes.
