I thought a wedding on a chartered yacht would be nice, any opinions? Anyone held their wedding on a yacht, or attended one? Tacky or nice?

A yacht is a great idea, because the party is kept in one place to celebrate and no one wanders off. People are also afraid of missing the boat, so they will show up early and on time. Plus if your new relatives get too rowdy, you can always toss them overboard.

Just be sensitive to the length of the cruise, I have been on a boat reception that was just too long and everyone was tired out and the food was gone...

At land weddings, many guests interpret cake cutting to be a signal that it's appropriate for them to leave. A yacht wedding will help people get out on the dance floor and stay together for your big exit!

For extra fun, throw in a surprise and have your boat boarded mid-cruise by musicians!

Definitely not tacky; a Yacht is the epitome of upper class society.

In addition, the backdrop sounds really nice. I've been a a few dinner cruises on some fancy boats (not even yachts) and it was lovely.

Just make sure the food is good and the bathroom facilities are good. I've been on lots of boats were the bathroom is the size of a airplane one. Although, I don't think that would happen on a yacht.

Also, I would do, is provide motion sickness medication for those who don't do well on boats.

I've done a lot of catering and event planning for a presidential yacht here. It's nice! Do all passed hors d'oeuvres...those boats can really sway when turning and the less food you have out, and the fewer tables, the better. Luckily, there's not that much turning, usually.

Also (learned this one the hard way): get centerpieces with a big foot and a low center of gravity!

EverythingNautical.com has very inexpensive nautical flags that look just fine for one day. I think they give the yacht a nice touch.

Also, it can get really cold on the water. As a rule, I subtract 20 degrees for windchill and spray.

My wife and I chartered a boat for the reception, had the wedding itself in a church. The reception was great. For one thing you have a captured crowd, nobody can leave until the boat comes back to the dock. People really let their hair down and had a good time. It was the best party I've ever been to/had.

Keep in mind that the more people you have the larger the boat your going to need. With a large crowd it can difficult for everyone to witness the actual wedding on yacht.

i have attended one that was very nice. the only problem i saw was that there were a lot of other boats on the water during that time, and the other boats' waves made the bridal party sway back and fourth throughout the ceremony. i know that's not something you have control over, but other than that the wedding was lovely.

another thing, one of the guests at this wedding became ill with motion sickness, so this is something you'll need to prepare for just in case.

I think it is very nice and it will definitely be a memorable event. However, as a word of caution, I would advise you to check with all of your immediate family and bridal party before you make the arrangements. If one of them gets seasick easily or has a phobia of boats/water, it could ruin your day. You may also lose a few guests who wont attend if they know that boats make them ill. Just a thought.

Good luck!

i think its a nice idea. Very intimate and personal and memorable. i agree with checking bathrooms.

Something to keep in mind... my family isnt exactly the most time-aware... if you know what i mean. You just need to let your guest be aware what time the boats shoving off.. and dont be upset if you gotta leave some folks behind.

That's is awesome way to get married. But then again do you want to invite alot of people. There is only a certain amount of people allowed which is kinda nice . Short sweet and en-expensive!! Good luck

Great idea! If it sounds fun to you, then I'd do it. I've never been to one but I had friend who had theirs on a boat and they loved it. They could not invite as many people but that was what they wanted anyway. Congrats!
