...the horrible grammar and spelling that is becoming more and more prevalent in our society, especially with that of the younger generation. Which seems to be facilitated through the increased use of SMS and IM.

yes it is awful...and growing worse...some of it is due to ignorance and some of it comes from encouraging youth to use short cuts in thought and speech and to imitate what they hear without being selective or even understanding what they are repeating

There have always been a lot of people who can't spell and write grammatically correctly.

But, no, on the whole I'm not that bothered, really.

The purpose of writing is communication; as long as people can get the point across. I notice, sometimes wince a bit, but then I go on with life.

What's much more worrisome is when the writing is so bad you can't tell what they're trying to say at all.

What disturbs me much more than writing ability is the poor quality of thought.

Dunno what SMS is, but the new messaging style isn't so bad, once you get used to it.

Languages change.

In this case, the change is due to new technology.

The younger generation has always driven the older generation crazy.

When I was a kid watching the older generation freak out over flower children, I decided to never let all that sort of stuff bother me.

It amuses me that people who a few decades a go disparaged people for making a big deal over hair lenghth no go on and on about piercings and pink hair and such.

Although I find piercings gross, I don't seem them reflecting the pierced people's character or intelligence.

YES!!!! Oh thank God someone else thinks this is an issue. I am only 23 and it bothers me to here my "peers" and those younger than myself say things like "ay, brah" instead of "hey, you", or "aight" in stead of "alright". I also work at a child care center that has a before and after school program and when I hear the school agers talking half the time I have no idea what so ever as to what they are talking about! I blame the rap industry. The slang and eboniques have way out lived their already annoying existance. I say that we take back language skills. the slang and eboniques as they are called have way out lived their already annoying existance.I have gone so far as to start speaking another language (japanese, or french) when one of the school-agers try and talk to me with the "new age language", thye have started to get the point that if I cant understnad you, they I'll make it so you can't understand me!

Actually, in the past, hardly anyone could read or write or use proper grammar. I'd say we are still improving overall, but I'd think kids would learn a little better spelling and grammar in school than they apparently do.

yeah I am because the younger generation are forgetting how to spell and write all they do is write slang and speak it. My cousin does not know how to write well. Based on personal experience when I let a friend of mine read my essay paper he said that I sounded white. Stereotype, I guess if you write well they call you white boy. Oh yeah of course I make errors in writing paper and online too and am too lazy to correct them.

Yes, I'm definitely disturbed, but I saw it happening long before IM and SMS. I think it started with emails, where the medium was/is considered less formal.

Absolutely!! There are so many abbreviations for words now that kids use and it is almost like a different language. It is like they dont care to learn the proper techniques in order to write a real sentance!!

YES!! I won't even read a question filled with shortcuts, abbreviations, misspellings and horrid grammar. It's just too painful.

Doesn't bother me . . I've kinda gotten used to all the idiots around - since there is little that i can do about the situation.

Language is bound to evolve, and lesser people are going to push evolution to prove their existence.
