First and formost, don't cut your own split ends!! Invest in a decent hair cut from a proffessional hairdresser. They will get rid of all your split ends and give you a cut that will look good as it grows out. I used to cut and colour my hair as I am an ex hairdresser. I did this for years, until my BF gave me £60 to go for a cut an colour! I could not believe how glossy and healthy my previous bleached hair looked after getting it done proffesionally!
Secondly, Heat treating damages your hair, as does tieing back with a bobble and brushing and using a hairdryer. You need an intensive conditioner, leave on for 5 mins before rinsing. Then put a heat protective serum on before blow drying. If you've had a good cut from a hairdresser, you're hair will definatly look glossy and healthy! A dentist wont send you home with a rotten tooth, a hairdresser will not send you home with split ends!! Honestly, it is the best advice you'll get!! See a hairdresser!!

1 Use a super absorbent hair towel to reduce drying time. ex) Aquis or The Body Shop
2) After shampooing & conditioning your hair, comb out tangles starting at the bottom w/ a wide tooth comb. Do not use a brush. Wet hair is the most prone to tearing & breakage.
4) Joico K-Pak shampoo & conditioner are the best for damaged hair. The conditioner can be use daily or as a deep conditioning mask.
5) Avoid using styling products w/ a lot of alcohol; stick to ones w/ alcohol lower down on the ingredients list.
6) Run a drop of jojoba oil through the ends of your hair. It will add a bit of sheen & makes a good leave in conditioner. Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic & washes out easily.

you can't PREVENT split ends, that is a ridiculous notion, EVERYBODY has split ends, but the way to help control HOW MANY splits end you get is by using shampoo/conditioner suited to your hair type, using heat defence spray when using heated stylers and to get regular trims every 4-6 weeks will cut off the split ends you DO have and helps to ensure the split ends don't travel all the way up the hair shaft.

Use a good hair conditioner/shampoo. Do not "back-brush" your hair. Have the ends of you hair trimmed every 4-6 weeks. Use a brush rather than a comb.Once a week put a raw egg into your hair and massage before thoroughly rinsing and shampoo out. Put a table spoon of vinegar in the final rinse water. It get the soap out of your hair and will make it shiny.

You can't.You've just got to look after your hair.Good shampoo, and conditioner,a good trim every 6-8 weeks. If you use sraighteners, try n lay off them abit or get a pair of ghd's,,they are the best and that way you don't end up going straightening over and over your hair, which will cause it to break.
Also if your hair is dull, maybe its your diet,if your inside is healthy, your outside will be too, trust me,i'm a hairdresser.
